Beauty Diaries: Why Dyeing My Hair Blue Was The Worst Decision I Ever Made

When I was in school, I was madly in love with Avril Lavigne’s music and her ’emo’  hair. I was in love with the idea of coloured hair and when she dyed them blue, I was obsessed! I cannot tell you how much I wanted to have blue streaks. I was just waiting to finish school so that I can finally get them!

My First Tryst With Hair Colour

Finally, in my first year of graduation, I gathered up enough courage to ask my mom if I can go ahead with it. She suggested opting for a more suitable colour since it was my first cousin’s marriage in less than three months! I dyed my hair red, and in a word, it was wonderful. Oh, the compliments I got after that!

I was in love with the new look and I think I loved it way too much because I got my hair dyed red four more times (Yes, it happened). I thought if red can look so good, it was finally time to bleed blue.

The Makings Of Blue Hair

Soon, I went to Mumbai with my sister and we decided to twin and experiment with our hair colour. Just like me, she was ‘dying’ to get her hair dyed blue and it took her exactly 5 minutes to convince me! We went to 5 different salons until we found a hairstylist who was willing to do our hair exactly the way we wanted!

Before going ahead with hair colour, I knew that my hair would be bleached and I was (kind of) okay with that. I didn’t know the repercussions and that was my biggest mistake.

After three long hours, I couldn’t wait to see the look. When the hairdresser finally revealed my new hair, I was in awe. He had dyed my hair dark blue with a subtle hint of purple. I was super happy. Until it started to fade.

And Then My Hair Colour Changed…

In less than a month, my hair went to sky blue from dark blue and the purple was turning into pink. Many people would have been worked up but I liked the idea of sporting a different hair colour with every hair wash.

The nightmare started when the hair started to turn white. I can fairly say that my hair looked like ‘dead ropes’.

I hated it. I hated my decision, I hated my hair. I hated my look. I hated all of it. There was nothing that could’ve been done. And thanks to all the bleach in my hair, I couldn’t colour it again. All I could think was, ‘What have I done to my hair?’.

One fine day, I went home and decided to do something about it. Yup, I chopped off all the blue chunks.

Sure, I had the worst hairstyle of all times but I felt free! My hair was 50% lighter and 100% smoother. I am still dealing with the aftermath but if there’s one thing I learnt, it’s that we should be fully prepared before going ahead with such a major hair change!

A few pointers to be kept in mind while getting your hair colour

-If you want to go for a dramatic a hair transformation (blues, greens, reds), it’s better to go for a temporary hair colour than permanent colour.
– Any drastic hair transformation will require lots of bleach. Your hair colour will change and you need to be OK with that.
– Be prepared for hair breakage.
-Start taking biotin tablets for healthier hair.
