I was browsing through Instagram when I found this picture of TV actor Mouni Roy, and I thought, 'wow her lips look amazing!' I'm sure I'm not the only one, and there have been moments you too wished your lips were just a wee bit bigger. While lip fillers have become the new normal, they are not everyone's cup of tea (to each his own I say!). So I thought I'd share my tried and tested hacks to get fuller lips. Sure, these won't last as long as a filler but they're ideal on those days you have a little extra time on your hands.
When I say fuller lips, I'm also talking about healthy lips. Dehydrated lips tend to look smaller so make sure you get your fill of water, juices, and fruits during the day. Just like you prime your skin with a face cream before you start makeup, prime your lips with a lip balm. Look out for emollients like shea butter, beeswax, and vitamin E since they help lock in moisture. Check out 11 Splurge-worthy Lip Balms here.
It so happens that dead skin cells, flakes, and all those long-stay formulas can stop blood circulation. You can boost circulation naturally though (thank God!) by taking an unused soft bristled brush and scrubbing your lips gently. I usually whip up a brown sugar scrub to make the most of this hack. All you need to do is:
a. Mix 1 tablespoon of brown sugar, granulated with 1 tablespoon of honey, preferably organic.
b. Apply it on your lips with your fingers or a toothbrush.
c. Let it set in for a few minutes and wash it off.
Most lip plumpers in the market have formulations which also come with a side of a tingling sensation. Yup, that's because ingredients like cinnamon and peppermint cause inflammation, making your lips look instantly plumper. PS: Your lips also look instantly fuller just after you eat spicy food!
Here's a simple recipe to use cinnamon:
a. Take a cinnamon stick and grind it into powder.
b. Mix it with petroleum jelly or honey and apply it on your lips.
c. Keep it on for 5-10 minutes. Wipe it off.
Huda Kattan did a fabulous routine on how she contours her lips, and if you watch the video, it's mostly about defining the natural structure of your lips, and enhancing what your Momma gave you.
a. Take your time with a lip liner. Trace the outline of your lips, adding more definition to the Cupid's bow as well as the sides of your mouth.
b. Applying a bit of highlighter or lip gloss to the centre of your lips also gives the appearance of a fuller pout.
c. You can also apply a lighter shade of lipstick (one grade lighter than the lipstick you're already wearing) just to the centre of your lips to give the illusion of fuller lips. Don't forget to blend it out though.
