Same is the case for women who are extremely thin. Reports have shown that women, whose Body Mass Index (BMI) is greater than 35 may take twice as long as a woman with normal BMI. Excess fat produces high levels of estrogen in a woman which can affect ovulation thereby delaying pregnancy. In fact, conceiving when overweight can also create various other complications for the baby and the mother. As a couple trying to get pregnant, start an exercise regime like a simple walk, or jog together in order to lose the excess weight.
Smoking and drinking alcohol affect the fertility quotient negatively both in men and women equally. So if you and your partner are trying to get pregnant, quit smoking and drinking as both these activities are known to reduce the count and quality of sperm in men and have an adverse effect on a woman's fertility.
Keep a track of your period cycle. A regular menstrual cycle means regular ovulation which is crucial for conception. A woman who desires try her best to predict her cycle by tracking the number of days between periods. You can also consult an OBgyn/Gynae to figure out your most fertile days or in other words, days when your ovaries will release an egg for conception. The fertile window in a woman is very small as a woman’s egg once released, is fertile for only 12-24 hours after release.
Women who have regular periods generally ovulate 15 days after their period gets over. This is slightly hard to predict for women with an irregular cycle, however, ovulation in this case usually happens 12-16 days before their next cycle. In case you want to be sure about when you are most fertile, there are several methods to determine this.
Home-ovulations kits are now easily available at most medical stores. Read the instructions carefully to attain desired results. Another way of determining ovulation period is by tracking your cervical mucus discharge. This method, however, is more accurate for women who have a regular cycle. You may have noticed a very clear slippery discharge that increases for a few days during the month. This is a sign that your ovaries are getting ready to release an egg. This slippery discharge makes it easy for the sperm to swim and fertilise the egg.
While it is most fruitful to have sex when you are ovulating, please also ensure that you do not treat the process of making baby as a chore. Keep the romance alive rather than treating the whole thing as an activity as a means-to-an-end.
