On the basis of television matrix, talent is not always enough to get the TRPs; controversies add the masala to a show. And boy, if there's one show that knows how to do it right, it's Bigg Boss. In the last 11 years, Bigg Boss seasons have made sure that people stayed glued to their television sets from 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Starting from the fights between the drama queen Rakhi Sawant and Kashmira Shah to all the screaming and shouting Hina Khan and Shilpa Shinde have done, Bigg Boss fights and controversies have successfully added a lot of drama to its viewer's life for at least three months, every year.
Eleven seasons have passed and we didn't even notice that three Ekta Kapoor actresses have managed to win all the challenges of the Bigg Boss house - Shweta Tiwari, Juhi Parmar and Urvashi Dholakia. In season 12, we can smell some controversy erupting from the words of Khan sisters but before we witness anymore crazy from the on-field Bigg Boss contestants, let's reminisce some past events from the house of controversies.
Season 1 was all about Rakhi Sawant and Kashmira Shah's catfight. Everything and everyone, including Ravi Kishan took a back seat when Rakhi opened her mouth. Kashmira entered the house with a game plan and turned all contestants against Rakhi Sawant which led to Rakhi's elimination. The two had started the show on a good note, but ended as foes. After being evicted in the fourth week, Rakhi Sawant returned to the house with gifts for each housemate from their families. Another controversy arose when the housemates couldn't believe Rakhi Sawant's story. She lied about getting gifts from the family members of the contestants and was caught in her web.
With each season, it gets crazier and crazier. Rahul Mahajan initially made news for running out of the Bigg Boss's house by jumping the wall. He tried his best to flirt with Pooja Bedi who did not reciprocate. Rahul later made Payal Rastogi his target. Payal revealed that she was in a relationship with Rahul Mahajan while they were in the Bigg Boss house and Rahul did hit her twice while they were on the show.
Another couple that was in headlines for their romance was Shweta Tiwari's ex-husband Raja Chaudhary and Sambhavana Seth. Initially, they got popular for abusing each other and then, they were caught kissing on the show.
This season was mostly in news because of Kamal R Khan, who threw a lot of tantrums inside the Bigg Boss house. He threw a bottle targeting Rohit Verma after a verbal fight which mistakenly hit Shilpa Shetty's sister, Shamita Shetty. He was thrown out of the house on the same night by the makers. Wow, that explains KRK's random and incompetent movie reviews.
Talk about being extra, TV actress Sara Khan and Ali Merchant were paid Rs 50 lakh to get married on the show in Season 4 of Bigg Boss. As they were already married, the marriage was considered forbidden but later Ali's mother Salma gave a statement saying that Muslim law permits the same couple to remarry. The viewers suspected that the whole marriage act was just a publicity stunt.
The TRPs went up when Pakistani actress Veena Malik got physical with Ashmit Patel. But by the end of the season, the spotlight was stolen by Dolly Bindra, who was a blend of Rakhi Sawant and Kamal Rashid Khan. Initially, Dolly Bindra's words and attitude were like fire, she was the loudest and the most dominating contestant Bigg Boss had ever seen but she calmed a little after her re-entry into the house. She had also accused Shweta Tiwari of giving sexual favours in exchange of Rs 75,000 and threatened to reveal her children's father's name to them. She also accused Ashmit Patel of making a controversial sex MMS with actress Riya Sen.
Despite a heated fight between Mahek Chahal and Akashdeep, Season 5 was probably the one with least amount of controversies as the TRPs went down to 0.69 at a point. Mahek had Salman support throughout, which fuelled her overconfident behaviour. She was under the impression that her walk to the finale would be a cakewalk but that's when Akashdeep aka Sky threatened Mahek that he will reveal her past on the national Television. The fight kept getting uglier.
Season 6 didn't just make news because of the contestants, but also because of Salman Khan and a commoner. Kashif Qureshi entered the house as a commoner. The show claimed that selections are based on auditions but when the media dug deep, they discovered that Kashif knew Salman Khan personally since Wanted.
As if this wasn't enough, another contestant Imam Siddiqui claimed that Salman owed him money and also took off his clothes after a fight with the housemates. Apart from that, Sapna Bhavnani, a hairstylist on the show, accused Salman Khan of being a 'serial woman-beater'.
The fight between British singer-actress Sofia Hayat and Armaan Kohli got out of control, so much so that Armaan Kohli was arrested from the house of Bigg Boss. Sofia had filed a complaint against him for allegedly assaulting her while she was on the show. Armaan Kohli's affair with Kajol's sister Tanisha Mukherjee created issues in her family, which was later sorted when she broke up with Armaan after leaving the Bigg Boss house.
Tanisha showcased violent behaviour on the show, despite that Salman was often seen favouring her instead of Kushal Tandon. Kushal was later thrown out of the house for supporting Gauahar Khan when Andy passed an obscene comment on Gauahar's lingerie. Kushal had attacked Andy and he was evicted.
In Season 8, Diandra's alleged affair with Gautam Gulati kept viewers busy, but what took everyone by surprise was Diandra's pregnancy rumours. It was rumoured that she was pregnant with Gautam's child. On the other hand, Ali Quli Mirza climbed the roofs to escape the Bigg Boss house and was later ended up getting slapped by Sonal Raut for passing inappropriate comments. Another incident that made headlines was Aarya Babbar's confession that Minissha Lamba was his girlfriend in the past. However, Minissha chose to not comment on these allegations.
Another, less controversial season in which contestant Rishabh Sinha made Kishwer Merchant walk like a dog for three hours, during a task. It was not just insulting but also inhumane.
Priyanka Jagga was kicked out by the host Salman Khan from Bigg Boss Season 10 for saying nasty things to Monalisa and Lopamudra Raut. And the bizarreness doesn't end here. Swami Om put his urine on co-contestants Bani J and Rohan for which he was evicted by the makers of the show. In a fight between Bani J and Lopamudra, Bani actually tried to strangle Lopamudra.
Season 11 evidently divided the audience into two teams. Fans were crazy for Hina Khan but also loved Shilpa Shinde on the show. Apart from the uncountable fights and competitions that happened between the two, in the show and after the show, Bigg Boss Season 11 was also in the news because of Zubair Khan. Zubair attempted suicide on the show and was hospitalised after consuming pills. The incident happened after Salman Khan blasted him for using abusive language against the women in the house. He also claimed that Salman threatened him saying that he won't be able to work in the film industry if he leaves the house. Salman Khan also called him a dog on the telecast episode but later he apologised by saying, "I really need to apologise... I am really sorry to all the dogs of this world."
Bigg Boss contestants Jasleen Matharu and Anup Jalota entered the Bigg Boss house as a couple, which was in itself a controversial deal for many. What had many mouths talking however was the fact that, after his eviction, Anup denied being in a relationship with Jasleen and said that there has always been a teacher-student relationship between them. He further revealed that the fake plot was invented by Jasleen and the producers to add more drama to the show.
Jasleen had frequent tiffs with fellow housemate Deepak Thakur. The fights carried on long after the season ended and even resulted in an FIR being lodged by Matharu. Jasleen did not have an affectionate relationship with housemate Some either. The two were seen in a brawl on the show, screaming, shouting and hitting
Viewers remember how Indian cricketer Sreesanth always found himself in the middle of a controversy because of his aggressive attitude, right? Ah! Bigg Boss controversies are galore!

After the previous two seasons that witnessed entertainment brought in by commoners, Bigg Boss 13 was an all-celebrity. Friends often turn foes, only to make up later, that’s what happened for Sidharth Shukla and Asim Riaz, Sidharth Shukla and Shainaaz Gill. The two duos would often get into fights. Getting physical is strictly prohibited in Bigg Boss, and many felt that Shukla was treated leniently by not being evicted. The audience talked a lot about that!
Shehnaaz was the second runner-up on Bigg Boss 13, while Sidharth walked home with the trophy. All throughout, the audience hoped to finally see them as a couple, however, they claimed to be just good friends till the very end. Fans even created a special hashtag - #SidNaaz - for them and made it one of the top trends on social media.
Bigg Boss controversies sometimes stir a pot of mixed feelings. Rashmi Desai’s relationship with Arhaan Khan is one such case. The two came off to the housemates, even the audience, as friends. Soon, viewers dugout that the two were a couple, and had even been living together for a while. One evening, Salman Khan revealed details from Arhaan’s past — his divorce, and being a father to a kid — to Rashami. He further hinted that he is misusing her assets. Rashami then cut all ties with Arhaan. Though many people supported show host Salman Khan, and the makers, for helping Rashami find the truth, many criticised them for exploiting Arhaan’s past to dramatise the show.
Furthermore, Bigg Boss 13 contestants Sidharth and Rashami were said to have dated each other while they were working on a show. Their past relationship off-screen and their chemistry on-screen during the show raised quite a few brows!
