Kate Valentine, or better known and remembered as Kate Spade, the American fashion designer and founder of the luxury fashion brand Kate Spade New York, passed away last night at the age of 55.
Spade’s older sister, Reta Brosnahan Saffo, made statements to multiple outlets on Tuesday night saying she believes her sister suffered from a mental illness for a number of years and that Spade’s suicide “was not unexpected by me.” According to her, Spade was “concerned how hospitalisation might harm the image of the happy-go-lucky Kate Spade brand,” and had “eventually became full-on manic depressive” due to the “stress and pressure” of her empire.
