"We get a lot of women and men interested in lip augmentation. Some are looking for a specific change in the appearance, while others have a celebrity inspiration in mind. Thus, initial counselling is a must. Before you meet the doctor, you should think about what you're looking for." says Dr Siddharth, MD, Garekars Dermatology.

Lip fillers help in rejuvenation(restoring the lost glory), remodelling (changing the existing shape of lips altogether) and enhancement(happy with what you have and looking for just a minor improvement).

A one on one session with your Doctor to discuss the end result is essential

"Once you have decided to take the plunge you need to sit down with your doctor and discuss every minute detail. I can’t think of any other facial feature which affects your appearance more than your lips. Every face and every lip is different, what works for a celebrity may not necessarily work for you. Your dermatologist would be able to guide and counsel you regarding the ideal change in the appearance of your lips. Make sure you both are on the same page before the procedure."

Is it permanent? What if I don't like the results?

Since the filler is made up of naturally occurring substances; the good news is that it isn't permanent. If you don't like the results the dermatologist can give you an injection that will dissolve the filler in a matter of hours.

What are the kind of lip fillers available in the market?

Most fillers are made up of Hyaluronic Acid. You should also be aware of the various lip filler brands available in our country. Allergan and Restylane the biggest names in fillers are available in India. Volift for lips has been introduced recently by Allergan and has shown a lot of promise. Restylane kiss is another brand which has been in the market for a long time and gives excellent results, says Dr Garekar.

How much does it cost and how long do results last?

The cost of the procedure would vary from INR 25,000/- to INR 30,000/- and the procedure results last for anywhere between 4-6 months.

How long does it take and does it hurt? What is the recovery period like?

Usually, your doctor will numb the area so it won't feel like anything. The procedure is done in less than 20 minutes and you may experience a little soreness or bruising after. It depends from person to person. Avoid getting the procedure done before an important event. Give yourself up to a week to recover.

Things to avoid before the procedure

Avoid alcohol a day prior to the procedure and discuss with your doctor if there are any other precautionary measures you need to take.

Important things you should keep your dermatologist informed about

There are certain medical conditions that are best disclosed to your doctor before procedures like these. Small things that you think may not matter, sometimes do. Give your doctor your entire medical history. A list of medications you are taking or have taken in the past.

"Inform you dermatologist regarding any pre-existing medical illnesses like diabetes or herpes. Certain medications can increase the chance of post-procedure bruising so it may be best to avoid medication such as Aspirin, Brufen, Vitamin E and Omega-3. If in case you are on any long-term medication, you should discuss it with your doctor before stopping." adds Dr. Garekar.
