“Oh how I love the way my hair feels and looks after a nice, long champi,” said no one ever!
The stickiness, smell, and multiple hair washes trump the relaxation that comes temporarily with a head massage. But no matter how much we crib about this, we have to accept that a good ol’ champi leaves you with lustrous, healthy-looking hair. It is after all a great health boost to your mane and the benefits are plenty. But like every other beauty treatment, there is a right way to go about oiling your hair. Here’s your guide to the correct way of doing your champi; this will make your tresses reap the maximum benefits from hair oil and make them fall in love with it.
There are some dense oils, while others are light. Make it a point to factor in your hair texture and density before picking the perfect oil for yourself. For those with dry and damaged hair, go for dense oils that stimulate the sebaceous glands and give the mane a good moisture boost too - jojoba, almond, coconut and mustard oils work well in this case. Oily hair calls for champis with lighter oils like sesame and olive oil.
A hot oil massage is not only more soothing on the scalp, but it also helps the oil penetrate the scalp easily as it opens up the hair follicles. It boosts blood circulation and thereby stimulates hair growth. Put the hair oil over the burner for 15-30 seconds and then apply in on the head.
A soft cotton ball application will be more gentle on the scalp. Dip a cotton ball in lukewarm oil and dab it onto your scalp. After this, use your fingertips to massage it in. Massage in circular motions to reap maximum benefits. This will be more stimulating for your hair growth and health.
After applying oil onto your hair, wrap your head with a hot towel. This will lock in more moisture into your tresses and make them all the more lustrous and well hydrated. For the hot towel treatment, all you have to do it dip a towel in boiling hot water for 30-40 seconds and then rinse it. Then, wrap it around your head for 10-15 minutes for best results.
Yes ladies, the only thing better than an oil massage is when it is done with a mix of two oils! Imagine the goodness of two oils in your hair! Mix up any two or three of your fave oils and start off with the massage. You can do mustard with coconut, or olive oil with some sesame oil - take your pick. Psst… My favourite combination is grapeseed and mustard oil.
The stickiness of the oil tends to attract more dust and grime to your scalp. These, in turn, can damage your roots and cause hairfall too. Leaving it on overnight is the longest you should do this, any longer will do more harm than good.
Once a week is non-negotiable if you want a healthy and shiny scalp and hair length. Make it a habit and don’t be irregular with this. Get up already, and pull out that bottle of hair oil from your dresser. Come one, chop-chop!
