It's that time of the month again where we talk about your period! And there's nothing great about that time of the month. Anxiety, PMS, mood swings, bloating, cramps— aaaahh, the boobs! Let's not even talk about the bleeding in your 800 count linen. I have managed to get my period on nearly EVERY vacation I've taken. Sometimes I think my cycle waits to sync up with my holiday. We know how annoying it can be to deal with your periods but with the right period product, your period just maybe a breeze.
Broadly speaking, there are two categories of feminine hygiene products - internal and external protection.
Tampons fall under the internal protection category. They are like bullets, slightly bigger inserted into the vagina and expand inside holding in all of the menstrual flow before it leaves your body. You can wear a tampon and be carefree about your periods. Just make sure you insert them in properly - it's a learning curve but totally worth it. If you can swim, play sports and go to the beach when you have your period what's not to like?
Tip: If you're trying it for the first time, buy tampons with an applicator.

One of the conventional external methods of protection, pads are basically compressed cotton that you would stick to your underwear. They aren't the ideal choice if you're travelling, going to play sports or lead an active lifestyle. Depending on your flow, you would need to change them every 3-4 hours.

Alternatives to tampons, menstrual cups too need to be inserted internally. They're basically made of medical grade silicone that's safe to be reused. The cup is soft and makes it easy to be inserted into the vagina. It needs to be placed inside the vagina, a few inches before the cervix. It collects all your blood and can be emptied easily every couple of hours. You need to rinse the cup before inserting it again. So if you're a little jittery around blood, give this one a miss. This is an underwear that replaces all of your period products! So if you're thinking rashes, leaking and painful inserts - check this out. The THINX underwear is supposed to hold about two tampons worth of period flow making them the ideal choice for almost anything. They won't leak or smell, so if you can't do pads and tampons buy yourself a few of these. The only downside is that they're not easily available in India, you'll have to get someone to bring you these.
POPxo Recommends: THINX underwear (Rs 2,210)
These work just like regular pads, all you need to do is rinse them out and then toss them into the washing machine. They look very similar to your normal sanitary napkin and fold over the sides of your underwear. If you're allergic to sanitary napkins and if you get rashes and all sorts of unpleasantries that time of the month, you're really going to like these cloth pads.
