‘Plogging’ Is The Environmental-Friendly Fitness Trend That You Need To Know About!

If there is a fitness trend out there, I need to know about it and try it. It’s not out of curiosity; but, out of compulsion. And if that fitness trend has an environmental benefit added to it, please count me in! Well, that’s exactly what ‘plogging’ combines – fitness and saving the environment. Originating from the Swedish words ‘plocka upp’, meaning pick up, the workout is exactly what it says it is.

The beauty of plogging as a workout lies in its simplicity. All it requires is a pair of gloves and a trash bag. Add some squats to it while you are picking up the trash and run with it for added weight and the benefits are just multiplied manifold.

This trend that started around 2016 in Sweden, due to awareness over the increasing plastic levels in the ocean, has suddenly become famous all over the world. With everybody trying to live a healthier and more environmental-friendly life, it was obvious that this trend would be picked up!

“Plogging is brilliant because it is simple and fun, while empowering everyone to help create cleaner, greener and more beautiful communities. All you need is running gear and a bag for trash or recyclables, and you are not only improving your own health, but your local community too.” Mike Rosen, senior vice president at Keep America Beautiful, said in a statement to Mashable.

Also called ‘trash running’, this activity is helping ensure that the sidewalks, trails and roads in countless cities are cleaner. And the thing about this latest trend is that there is a feeling of giving back to the community as it is not just an exercise you do for yourself but for the greater good of the society, as well. The main idea is to essentially clean up the litter while fitting in whatever exercise you can get, even if it is walking your dog.

Maybe it’s time we got to plogging here in India, as well. Hope all of us fitness junkies can help make this trend go viral in our country soon!
