The Time's Up Movement Has Shaken Up Hollywood, But The Silence In Bollywood Is Deafening

The Time's Up Movement Has Shaken Up Hollywood, But The Silence In Bollywood Is Deafening

Time's Up is a powerful initiative taken by women in Hollywood attending the Golden Globes, they stood against silence, against sexual harassment and against abuse at the workplace. With worldwide donations pouring in, a $13-million legal defence fund was set up to support lower-income women seeking justice for the rampant sexual harassment and assault in the workplace.

When was the last time Bollywood stood together as an industry to fight against an issue? Forget the award show aspect of it, since obviously, our award shows are anything but honest. Basically meant to provide an ego boost for the stars who attend, maybe that's where we should start? While actors including Priyanka Chopra, Eva Longoria, Madonna and Hillary Duff took a stand, where were our celebrities?

The movement asked people across the globe to speak up, and yet none of the Indian celebrities thought the cause was worthy of support? Not when #MeToo was discussed and not when #TimesUp came to be. Constantly living behind walls, it's time we looked beyond our rosy celebrity lifestyle and used it to raise our voice against the pervasive sexism and abuse that exists in most of our workplaces.
