#CleanBeauty: Here's How You Can Get Your Glow On With Ayurveda

A quick glance at beauty aisles in most places you'll easily be able to spot a lot of Ayurvedic ingredients, solutions and products. They are slowly making their way into the mainstream beauty industry too! Stand-alone brands like Kama Ayurveda and Forest Essentials aside, many drugstore brands are looking at Ayurveda to enhance their beauty products. We thought we’d delve a little deeper into some of the most common and effective Ayurvedic tips, to get a better understanding and start practising them ourselves!

Firstly, Identify Your Skin

According to Ayurveda, there are 3 different skin types known as Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Depending on which skin type you have, there are different treatments, diets and products that will work best for you. So, find out your skin type by doing a little research online visit an Ayurvedic practitioner nearby.

Vata (Dry Skin)

The Vata skin type is similar to people who suffer from dry skin. People with a vata skin type are vulnerable to cold, windy weather. The main concern for dry skin types is early ageing and dehydrated skin. Dry, dull skin usually causes your skin to age quicker.

Tip 1: It’s all about hydration!

Stay hydrated and find products that will nurture and pamper your skin. Vata skin is also said to be really thin and sensitive. This means that you need to be mindful of what products you use. Try to look for alternatives that are natural and include some essential oils in your regime. The healing benefits that are derived from essential oils in Ayurveda are unmatched! Luckily for us, a lot of Ayurveda companies make natural, organic products rich in essential oils. We suggest a good hydrating moisturiser combined with a facial mist to keep your skin from drying out.

POPxo Recommends: Kama Ayurveda Eladi Hydrating Ayurvedic Face Cream (Rs 1,125) and the Forest Essentials Light Hydrating Facial Gel Pure Rosewater (Rs 1400)

Tip 2: Throw in an anti-ageing product in your twenties.

Start your anti-ageing beauty routine sooner; even in your early 20s. Dry skin tends to age faster and fine lines, wrinkles or dark spots show up quicker due to lack of moisture in the skin. Fight those off with using natural anti-wrinkle products and work in a monthly facial into your schedule.

POPxo Recommends: Vaadi Herbals Anti-Ageing Cream - Almond, Wheatgerm Oil & Rose (Rs 58)

Pitta (Acne-prone Skin)

Pitta can be equated to acne-prone skin, which is susceptible to dark spots and freckles. Acne, dark spots, pigmentation and hypersensitivity to the sun are a few of the main issues that people that classify under Pitta.

Tip 1: Never skip SPF!

Use a good SPF. Nothing helps prevents sun damage like a strong SPF, which you should be using every day before you head out the door. Whether you are more comfortable with natural sunscreens or generic ones, this product is a beauty essential and very important for this skin type.

POPxo Recommends: Biotique Bio Carrot Ultra Soothing Face Lotion SPF 40+ UVA/UVB Sunscreen For All Skin Types (Rs 86)

Tip 2: A good face cleanser will keep all your woes at bay.

Work in an anti-acne face wash into your daily beauty routine. Use it once or twice a day to help fight off excess sebum or dirt build up which can cause breakouts. Pitta skin is said to naturally have acne, so adding products that can target this issue is a must.

POPxo Recommends: Mantra Neem & Haldi Anti-Acne Face Wash (Rs 750)

Kapha (Oily skin)

Kapha skin type tends to be of the oily skin type and is more tolerant of sun damage. It is also said that since this skin type is oily, that toxins tend to build up in the skin and in the pores.

Tip 1: Exfoliate once a week.

Exfoliate regularly...Oily skin leads to an enormous build-up of dead skin cells. These, in turn, make you look dull and clog your pores causing blackheads and whiteheads. Use a good face and body scrub and try to schedule a monthly clean-up at a reputable salon.

POPxo Recommends: Himalaya Herbals Gentle Exfoliating Apricot Scrub (Rs 75)

Tip 2: Maintain that pH balance.

Use clarifying products that will remove excess oil from your skin while not stripping your skin's natural PH balance. Stay away from harsh products that make your skin feel dry and stretched out. This causes more problems in the long run.

POPxo Recommends: Kama Ayurveda Rose Jasmine Face Cleanser (Rs 375)

Whatever your skin type, it’s best to have a good routine that you stick to. Always remember to use quality products and brands. Stay away from locally manufactured products and brands that don’t list their ingredients on the packaging. If you find that a product isn’t doing your skin any good, it’s best if you explore alternatives. In the modern day world of Ayurveda, there are thousands of products you can choose from!
