In the history of award shows in Bollywood, we’ve got another shocker! Golmaal Again just won the Zee Cine Best Movie Award. That’s right. In another year of great cinema, we’ve proclaimed the best movie to be an averagely comic, plot-less franchise made solely with the purpose of being commercially successful.
Which brings me to a very important question on how we are actually judging cinema in India. What makes us call a movie the ‘best movie’? The amount of money it earns at the box office, the superstars it has, or the actual direction and story behind it?
Let’s, for example, talk about the movies that released in 2017. We had the Rajkummar Rao starrer Newton which even made it to the Oscar nomination (but obviously, wasn’t good enough for Zee Cinemas). There was Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar (which bagged the Best Director, Best Female Actor in Supporting Role and Best Actor In a Negative Role awards but still didn’t make the cut for the best movie). Let’s not forget Jagga Jasoos, Rangoon, Trapped, Hindi Medium, Bareilly Ki Barfi, among many others. All great pieces of Indian cinema this year that found no spot on the Zee Cine Awards list.

Golmaal Again, on the other hand, with its mindless comedy acts, a couple of offensive jokes and pretty questionable acting skills completely stole the show for Zee Cinema? Now, to be honest, I am the kind of person who is all up for mindless comedy. So I have nothing against Golmaal Again existing as a movie but I do shake my head (quite vigorously) when it is declared as the best this year. I am not the only one to go down this course of thought, of course. Twitter, as always, was the first to call out Zee Cine Awards for their rather cringe-worthy decision.
The highlight of the night was the Best Picture Award. Nope, not Newton. Not Tumhari Sulu. Def not Bareily ki Barfi. Hindi Medium/Secret Superstar? Nah…. it’s… Golmaal Again, yo! Host Rohit Shetty’s response: “arrey.. this is so ..unexpected” #ZeeCineAwards2018

And then they excoriate Kangana Ranawat for saying awards are rigged, and diss Aamir for ignoring them. 😀 https://t.co/V2UKCYwXGN

Would have laughed if this was a joke. But like Rohit Shetty’s films, it ain’t funny. https://t.co/47OfhJQOpe

Bollywood as an entity has done better than Golmaal Again and continues to do so every day, so why can’t the award shows keep up?
