Is It Better To Get A Haircut When Your Mane Is Wet Or Dry? We Finally Have An Answer!

Is It Better To Get A Haircut When Your Mane Is Wet Or Dry? We Finally Have An Answer!

Come winter and with it a flurry of invites leading to frequent salon visits. While most of us are used to shampooing our hair and then getting a trim or a cut, a lot of experts insist on cutting it dry. So which is better? Is there a difference in the end result? We spoke to Heena Dalvi, National Creative Director, Lakmé Salons (Hair) to get to the bottom of it.

Choose Dry Haircuts When…

A lot of men walk into a barbershop and get their haircut, while it’s dry. Sometimes there’s no shampoo, and a lot of times the hairdresser doesn’t even spritz their heads with water. A lot of fancy salons shampoo, dry and then cut the customer’s hair. Would you be up for it? “Dry cutting is a boon for people with curly and wavy hair. It’s harder to tell where the curls are going to lie when your hair is soaking wet. Hence, cutting while the curls are dry lets you choose where to cut so that they lie atop one another just right,” explains Dalvi.

When you’re cutting hair dry, you can also see the shape as it’s forming so if you’re getting a dramatic change, opt for a dry cut.

Go For Wet Haircuts When…

“I usually recommend wet haircuts for thinner, straighter hair with a blunt edge as they can easily be trimmed when wet,” explains Dalvi. While wet hair is ideal for layers or bangs, the hairstylist needs to adjust the cut keeping in mind the actual length of the hair once it dries.

If your hair is straight or slightly wavy, a wet haircut is an obvious choice in salons. If you’re getting a long bob or a trim, it’s the best way to be precise. “When cutting bangs, it’s always better to go back and trim a bit more than to have short bangs,” says Dalvi.

Keep in mind that wet hair is more fragile and therefore prone to breakage. You’re likely to shed fewer strands during the whole process if you have a dry cut, “which is important for people with thinning hair,” says Dalvi.

So the next time you’re at the salon, make a choice depending on your hair texture and style!
