Meet Selvi, The First Woman Taxi Driver In South India, In An Inspiring Documentary

While there are a million people in the world that let women down in some way or the other, there are others that lift us up. Sometimes, we don’t even need that. Because we’ve got our own backs and there’s nothing more amazing than self-love and care. Because when all else fails, the cape on your back will never fall.

Just like us, is this girl who grew up in Karnataka and is the first woman taxi driver in South India. However, it’s her story and how she decided to change things one fine day, that will make your heart swell with joy. Married at the age of 14, Selvi had an abusive relationship with her husband. She wanted to kill herself by jumping under the bus, instead, she boarded the bus and started driving it. Making her the first woman driver of South India.

Her documentary, Driving with Selvi directed by Canadian filmmaker Elisa Paloschi has gained a lot of popularity at International film festivals and here is a little trailer that will make you want to watch the full documentary right away.

In a country like India where women need some form of motivation to get back up and fight no matter what, Selvi’s wise words are resonating in my ears – “There is no rule in India to keep suffering”. Every girl must take inspiration from this and learn. We might be fighting our own battle, some big and some really small, but the hero inside us should always keep taking inspiration from little things that matter.
