How Chinese E-tailers Are Wooing The Indian Fashionistas!

The biggest e-tailers of Indian market such as Myntra, Jabong and Amazon can easily muscle out small-scale platforms but we are witnessing an unexpected market result. Chinese e-tailers are now attracting Indian shoppers and the reason is their offering of low or affordably priced fast fashion.

Reportedly, China-based retailers like SheIn, Club Factory and AliExpress have been bagging up to 10,000-15,000 orders daily on an average (as per e-commerce logistics firms). These online retailers are catering to the customers worldwide. The number became even more impressive to us when it was revealed that the Indian vertical online retailers themselves, ship out about 10,000-30,000 daily.

Targeting done through social platforms like Facebook and Instagram is helping these sites in India. The success of Chinese e-tailers is certainly affecting the state of local sites like Voonik, Craftsvilla, Zivame which are struggling to survive against well-funded rivals.

With the arrival of eBay, the cross-border e-commerce started in India more than a decade ago. And even Amazon has started shipping their US store-based products to India with an added shipping cost. The world knows that India is a plus market most of the businesses and it’s practically visible now.

Though the size and stats of these Chinese e-tailers are still much smaller than the collective 1.5 lakh-2 lakh registered orders daily by Myntra, Jabong and Flipkart Fashion. Most Chinese sites do not accept cash on delivery (except for Shein), which is still the most preferred mode of payment for Indians shopping online. From customers’ point of view, there’s a huge possibility that these retailers don’t have registered offices.

Satish Meena, senior forecast analyst, Forrester Research shared in his interview with a publication, “Free delivery encourages consumers to shop cross-border from a lot of the newer sites. The buyers are divided into two categories – discount hunters opting for Chinese online retailers and those looking for brands which are not available in India. But the bulk of orders are coming from the discount hunters currently.”

The only drawback currently being faced is shipping time. While on one hand, be it Myntra, Jabong or Flipkart, we can expect our packages to arrive in a week’s time, sites like Club Factory have a reputation of taking about a month to deliver the products. Although, the shipping process for AliExpress and SheIn is much more sorted.
