How To Take Care Of Your Vagina In 7 Simple Ways

As women, we are often at a loss of words when we discuss our vaginal health. Your ‘hoo-haa’ is too precious to be disrespected, take good care of your ‘goods’! I found my first trip to the gynaecologist absolutely horrifying (too many equipments I wasn’t familiar with) but now I WhatsApp her with my daily quibs and she’s always happy to help. Here are a few things about my vagina that I didn’t know before and I’m ready to impart some knowledge.

1. Shave Safe

It isn’t really a question of hygiene when it comes to shaving or waxing your pubic hair. But if you are someone who prefers to be super clean down there, make sure you use clean razors and incase of any cuts contact your doctor immediately. Also, if you’re waxing then double check the equipment being used.

2. Pap Smears

These are necessary for anyone who is sexually active between the age of 21-29, every 3 years. But older women between 30-65 years of age should get a HPV (Human Papillomavirus, causes cervical cancer) testing alongside their pap smear test, every 5 years.

3. Wash Carefully

Though those perfumed soaps and washes may seem tempting, they actually aren’t good for you. The best way to wash your vagina is water and a pH balanced vaginal wash like V Wash (Rs 180), Vagisil (Rs 1,502) and Lactacyd Perineal Wash (Rs 1,903).

4. Regular Gynae Visits

If you’re over 21 years of age, meet your gynecologist annually just for a regular check up, to make sure that everything is in proper working order. You’ll be surprised at how important these visits are.

5. Wear Cotton

Cotton underwear may be a little ugly or ‘basic’ but it’s your vagina’s best friend. Comfy, cool and breathable, it’s exactly what you need. So go cotton or go commando, your choice.

6. Greek Yogurt

The non-sugary greek yogurt has live cultures that helps boost the good bacteria in your vagina, so why not get snacking on something healthy? It also prevents yeast infections, that make you smelly.

7. Menstrual Hygiene

Lets not make periods worse than they already are? Wash your hands as much as possible and keep yourself clean and dry, use vaginal washes during your periods as well. It isn’t recommended to wear tampons to bed, use pads instead at night. And change your pad every 4-6 hours, says Dr Varshini Balan, MBBS, Ramachandra Medical College.

Stay healthy, ladies!
