Aside from the fact that every Indian is drawing their ‘hype-spiration’ (Hype inspiration, for noobs) from the contiguous reality TV shows that are mindless and numbing, in no particular order - Bigg Boss and India’s Next Top Model, anyone? - there is one offline event that is taking modern Indians by a storm that is more of an undercurrent than it is an overture.
You would have heard of these two words being used together over the past week or so. From social media platforms to on-ground events and meet-ups, people are talking.
Suede Gully is India’s largest street collaboration till date which consists of 36 dancers, 8 rappers and 7 artists who have come together to take creativity and social awareness to the next level. The campaign which has been produced by sports and athleisure brand, Puma, is a synergy of three art forms coming together in what could only be called the perfect symphony. Across graffiti, music and dance, well known artists have created a phenomenon. And it’s called Suede Gully.

It is an ode to the suede sneaker which has become more than just an iconic fashion statement - an attitude and a choice that speaks about the personality of the wearer. The aim is to bring India’s street culture to the front - art meets rebellion, culture meets swag, and music meets colour.
Set in various different cities across India - Delhi, Mumbai, Shillong and Madurai, the video for Suede Gully features street artists like Shilo Shiv Suleman, Anpu, Zake, The Indian Artist and Baadal Nanjudaswamy; with the anthem being sung in 4 different languages - Hindi, Khasi, Tamil and Punjabi by Divine, Khasi Bloodz, Madurai Souljour and Prabh Deep respectively. Renowned contemporary dancer, Mukti Mohan, along with Unity One, Beast Mode Crew, Black Ice Crew and Unity Crew (all dance units) to crank it up a notch with their electric moves.
Suede Gully isn’t just another one of those here today gone tomorrow videos; this is a message; it’s a call to action for people from all creative fields - and really, there’s a little bit of creativity in everyone - to come together and let their voices be heard as one, in unison!
