“I always love to dress up, but I usually end up in a leather jacket and boots!” Bella Hadid is so us, isn’t she? “I like wearing sundresses and cowboy boots”, said Taylor Swift once. Even Gigi Hadid is a “cool boyfriend jeans, boots, and an awesome coat” kind of person. And don’t even get us started on Priyanka Chopra’s envious boots collection that makes us want New York-like roads here in India so our boots too can walk on the fabulous pothole-free streets that they deserve. In fact, Kareena Kapoor Khan loves boots so much that she wears them (literally) all the time - in the Mumbai summer, during a humid-as-hell Goa vacation, and in the London winter.
It is this motivation and a pair of good ol’ boots that makes me not snooze my alarm on a misty Winter morning. December has started, and therefore, so has our search for gorgeous boots! Here’s our boot wish list comprising of 34 different types of boots to amp up your vocab, and wardrobe, all at once. Time to give the blanket the boot, saddle up, and put on a pair, ladies.
There is no good way to decide which type of boots you want. There are just too many options to choose from. Lace-up boots, slip-on boots, buckled boots, zipper-fastening, drawstring-fastening - when there are so many ways of wearing the boots, imagine the plethora of boot styles.
So, we are here to make it easier for you. We have curated a list of the best boots this season and differentiated them based on different categories such as the length of the boot, its material, the heel type, and other statement-making styles. Give these boots a hoot and shoe away the winter blues in style.
The first and the foremost way to decide the type of boots you want is by deciding the length you want to wear. This will depend on the height of your boot shaft. And keep in mind that dressing for your body type isn't just restricted to clothes. The right pair of boots could either help or hurt your look because not every boot length will flatter your legs. For example, if you are short in height, keep in mind that your shaft length is not longer than the length of your calves because this can make you look shorter. What we are trying to say is that tall boots for short women is a no-go as against the popular myth.
So, here are different types of boots based on boot length:
Low cut boots that end below the ankle usually come with a heel and a closed toe so they don’t look like sneakers, brogues or your regular heels. They can have a lace-up fastening and can come in a slip-on style too. Style these black boots with cropped trousers or jeans to see them at their best.
POPxo Recommends: Low Cut Boots (Rs 2,076) by New Look at 20% off
The ankle length boot style ends right at the ankle covering it, and owing to the shaft height, flatters most silhouettes and styles. The Chelsea boot would be a classic example of an ankle boot, but more on that later. This casual brown pair is versatile enough to go with everything.
POPxo Recommends: Ankle Boots With A Zip (Rs 2,299) by H&M
Calf length boots go as high as your calves. They ensure comfortable movement all day without compromising on style while at it. These taupe boots with a front zipper-fastening will look great with black and blue jeans when teamed with a sweatshirt or a hoodie.
POPxo Recommends: Zipper Front Calf Length Boots (Rs 2,924) by Shein
Boots that end just on your knees are called knee-high boots. As much as we love tall boots, these can be a little difficult to manage since the boot ends exactly on the joint. Team these with skinny jeans or with black stockings for a chic look this season.
POPxo Recommends: Knee Length Plain Boots (Rs 2,680) by Shein
Over-the-knee or thigh-high boots have the longest boot shaft and go as high as your thighs. Ditch your pants, wear an oversized sweater (yes, me mean lampshading), and top it with a printed scarf for a funky street style look. You can even wear these with a mini skirt and a fitted sweater (are you thinking Rachel Green?) for that ‘don’t-kill-my-vibe’ attitude.
POPxo Recommends: Flat Over-The-Knee Boots (Rs 4,990) by Zara.
Suede is the most commonly seen, and bought, material for boots thanks to its soft sandpaper-like look and feel. It is essentially a type of leather but, in fact, much softer and pliable. This pair of navy blue round-toe heeled boots will go with all kinds of bottoms and that is why it’s a wardrobe must-have.
POPxo Recommends: Navy Blue Solid Heeled Boots (Rs 1,749) by Bruno Manetti at flat 50% off
Velvet is that one material we have a love-hate relationship with. Somedays, it can make you look your stylish best, other days, not so much. When it comes to velvet, boots are an excellent way to incorporate the trend into your wardrobe. This pair of wine-coloured short velvet boots featuring a pointed toe and a chunky heel will come to your rescue when you’re having one of those, ‘I have nothing to wear’ days.
POPxo Recommends: Velvet Chunky Heel Boots (Rs 2,499) by Forever 21
We are pro genuine products but don’t support materials that involve cruelty against animals. So, for us, leather means a good quality, branded, imitation leather that gives the right feel without any harm. Leather boots give a structured look and last longer than other materials with minimal wear and tear. Plus, they’re easy to clean and maintain too. And this pair of brown, knee-high boots has our heart this season.
POPxo Recommends: Knee-high Boots (Rs 4,499) by H&M
Patent leather is a type of leather with a glossy varnished surface, used chiefly for shoes, belts, handbags and, off late, even pants. Due to its highly shiny surface, patent leather is an attractive material in whatever form it comes. And that’s why these short boots with a contrast side-striped trim will be a head turner this season.
POPxo Recommends: Faux Patent Leather Striped-Trim Boots (Rs 2,299) by Forever 21
PU aka polyurethane is a material made with bi-cast leather. It looks as genuine as real leather on the surface but isn’t leather at all. These black lace-up platform boots will be a perfect match for you if you like to make a bold statement. Go big or go home we say!
POPxo Recommends: Lace-Up Platform Boots (Rs 2,357) by Shein
Let me stop you right here. No, they are not UGG’s. UGGs actually is not a boot style at all but in fact, the boots made by an Australian brand of the same name that mastered the style. Fleece-lined boots feel like soft pillows for your feet owing to the cushioned footbed. Fleece is a soft warm fabric with a texture similar to sheep's wool, used as a lining material. The best part? They are as comfortable as they are cute and that is what makes them so common. Team these with fitted bottoms for maximum style.
POPxo Recommends: Brown Solid Flat Boots (Rs 3,077) by Next at 15% off
Remember Jennifer Lopez’s denim boots that were all the hoot a few months ago? If not, you would definitely remember Kriti Sanon’s shoes in Main Tera Boyfriend. Denim boots are fabric boots made entirely out of denim and usually come with a heel. When you are not in the mood to wear jeans, wear these denim boots instead. You see, denim never disappoints! And the best part about these is that you can fold them all the way down, unlike other tall boots.
POPxo Recommends: Distressed Over-The-Knee Boots (Rs 1,450) by Ajio at 50% off
Faux-fur boots, ah, they have winter written all over them. Since a lot of fashion brands are going 100% fur-free to support no cruelty against animals, faux-fur boots have become everyone’s new favourite. The look exactly like fur but with no harm done. Wear a trench coat, wrap around a muffler, and don’t forget a pair of fuzzy gloves and a tinted lip balm for the perfect #OOTD.
POPxo Recommends: Faux Fur Boots (Rs 1,299) by Forever 21
Satin is a soft and naturally shiny material that can make any accessory look oh-so-smooth and sexy. Here’s a pair of statement-making satin boots featuring a soft satin construction with a lace-up grosgrain ribbon front and stiletto heel. These thigh-high boots will make your Saturday night truly memorable. Count on Instagram for proof.
POPxo Recommends: Satin Over-the-Knee Boots (Rs 3,099) by Forever 21
If you want a slightly dressier version of boots, lace boots are your best bet. These black, short boots with a sheer lace panel are what you need to look anything but basic. After all, what you need to turn ‘try’ into ‘triumph’ is a little bit of oomph. And these boots are it. *wink wink*
POPxo Recommends: Lace Ankle Boots (Rs 2,299) by Forever 21
Boots with a slim pencil heel are called stiletto heeled boots. They are the perfect footwear if you want a classy cum sassy look for a night out with the gang. You can pair these with dresses, skirts, trousers, jeans, you name it.
POPxo Recommends: Sheeny Stiletto Ankle Boots (Rs 1,799) by Forever 21
Low heeled boots are perfect for you if you don’t like to wear high heels but won’t mind a little lift either. Chelsea boots usually have a low heel and a smaller boot shaft making them a versatile pair and can be teamed with pretty much everything. Make any casual day look fancy AF!
POPxo Recommends: Chelsea Boots (Rs 1,599) by Koovs
Of all the heel styles, wedge heels are the most tried, tested, and trusted heels that won’t hurt even if you are on your feet all day long. I am wearing a pair myself as I write this article and I couldn’t be more comfortable. These boots have the sole in the form of a wedge, such that one piece of material (normally the rubber) serves as both the sole and the heel. These navy blue wedge-ankle boots in imitation suede will ensure a comfy and chic style.
POPxo Recommends: Wedge-heel Boots (Rs 2,999) by H&M
Just like block heels, block heeled boots too are a popular choice among millennial women. They give a comfier feel than stiletto heeled boots and a cooler look than the wedge heeled boots. Add these black floral printed boots to your wardrobe and make a statement one step at a time.
POPxo Recommends: Ankle Boots With Elastic Gores (Rs 2,699) by H&M
Personally, I am not a fan of the kitten heel style, but when it comes to boots, it is one of the most stylish pairs I have ever seen. Kitten-heeled boots, especially this one with a pointed-toe heel, will work best with wide-legged bottoms. Achieve that effortless formal look in no time.
POPxo Recommends: Kitten Heel Chelsea Boots (Rs 2,299) by Intoto
A stacked heel, also known as built heels, gives the illusion of thin layers of wood or other materials that have been stacked together to create the heel. This heel style is commonly seen in women’s boots and men’s shoes. Style this pair of brown booties with jeans and a tee and throw over a cool denim jacket to complete the ‘basic babe’ look.
POPxo Recommends: Almond Toe Low Stacked Heel Split Shaft Booties (Rs 1.737) by Shein
Flat boots, as the name suggests, have absolutely no heel and come with a completely flat sole. These navy blue lace-up flat boots will give you a sporty yet feminine look this winter. Style them with your boyfriend jeans and a knitted sweater to wear to college.
POPxo Recommends: Navy Mid-Top Flat Boots (Rs 998) by Carlton London at flat 60% off
Ever wondered what these baggy boots are called? Slouchy, that’s them! They usually fit loosely around the top, gathering towards the ankle owing to the slouchy leg details and are so hot to look at. The slouchy style looks best in tall boots. Wear these with mini skirts and dresses to really knock it out of the park.
POPxo Recommends: Broadway Walk Tall Boots (Rs 699) by Street Style Store
The socks and heels might be a difficult trend to pull off. But slipping on a pair of sock-fit boots is like walking on a bed of cotton, both literally and figuratively. Super comfortable and warm, this is the best investment for a stylish winter. In our opinion, sock-fit boots look the best in a peep-toe style. Team your midi dresses, skirts, and cropped culottes with a pair of sock-fit boots for a celeb-approved look.
POPxo Recommends: Sock Fit High Ankle Boots (Rs 3,116) by No Doubt at 20% off
Short boots for women (or booties) are one of our personal favourites. They are easy to pull-off, uber stylish, and fashionable enough for a work to twerk OOTD. Our tip: wear them with sheer crew socks with your cropped trousers to make a statement. You can also wear booties with wide-legged pants and skirts - that is how versatile the style is.
POPxo Recommends: Set Fire Boots (Rs 699) by Street Style Store
With buckle and zip details, these flat, riding boots in black look as badass as they sound. Made out of PU, your basic black jeggings and skinny jeans will look so much hotter in these. Team them with a cool leather jacket and don’t forget your sunglasses to nail the biker chic look.
POPxo Recommends: Flat Boots With Buckle (Rs 3,990) by Zara
This season, give your jeans, maxis and midi dresses a spin with a pair of tough, and tasteful, combat boots. Combat boots or army boots are high-top boots with a lace-up fastening. These ones in a camel brown colour will make you want to head out for an adventure every day. So, march on in style.
POPxo Recommends: Suede Boots (Rs 5,499) by H&M
A nice pair of cut-out boots is so hard to find. These black0heeled ankle boots with cut-out sides are every woman’s guide to looking her branded best without spending a bomb. Wear them with loafer socks for comfort all day long.
POPxo Recommends: Cut-out Ankle Boots (Rs 2,890) by Zara
I, for one, like my boots brown and bold. They go with every outfit (even skirts, yes) and that is why my winter wardrobe always has one such pair. This season, I am going with these tall boots with fringe detail. This pair comes in a suede-finish and with a dramatic fringe detail that is perfect to add a dash of life to your good old black tights.
POPxo Recommends: Tassel Detail Knee High Boots (Rs 2,832) by Shein
Close-fitting, high-ankle boots with an elastic side panel, Chelsea boots are meant for everyone. Whether you’re 15 or 50, they are an all-time classic, and everyone should own a pair. Especially this one in a matte black colour. Pair them with your straight or relaxed-fit jeans and slip into sexy instantly.
POPxo Recommends: Chelsea Boots (Rs 2,299) by H&M
Oxford boots are nothing but typical oxford shoes with either a longer boot shaft or an attached block heel. They have the same perforations, shoelace eyelets, and a leather-finish like those you see in the shoe, but in a less formal look and feel. What a fashionable way to make the office a happy place! Team these with your work pants and see the difference in your level of confidence at the office.
POPxo Recommends: Beige Perforations High-Tops Flat Boots (Rs 2,306) by Red Pout at 30% off
The snakeskin print trend gained the most popularity among all animal prints this year since Priyanka Chopra wore a pair on her bachelorette weekend in Amsterdam. If you are planning to buy printed boots this season, make ‘em snakeskin. Just imagine how great they’ll look with your monochrome and solid outfits?!
POPxo Recommends: Snakeskin Print Point Toe Ankle Boots (Rs 2,282) by Shein
Sneaker boots are boots that have a sneaker-like shoe-shape in a boot style. This 2018 trend is popular among sneakerheads who want to give a wintery touch to their sneaker collection. This style isn’t easily available, though. But we have managed to find the perfect pair for you. Not too sporty, not too formal, but just the right balance of casual chic.
POPxo Recommends: XL Fabric Sneakers (Rs 4,990) by Zara
Rain boots, essentially made to be worn during the monsoon, can make for an excellent statement-making piece in winter as well. Rain boots usually come in quirky designs and patterns, have a glossy finish owing to the man-made upper and sole material, and are all-weather and all style. Get your hands on these black and white polka-dotted rain boots already, ladies.
POPxo Recommends: Mini Dots Mid Rain Boot (Rs 2,470 approx) by Nordstrom at 17% off
