It was the day of the inter-college painting competition that I first saw Sam. My friend and roommate, Sara, who was to organize this event, fell ill at the last minute. Even though I was taking part in this competition, she asked me to organize it all since she wasn’t going to make it to the venue. It was just before the competition started, as I was running around, busy organizing everything, that I bumped in a fellow contestant (Sam) and well, it was love at first sight.
I couldn’t give this experience too much of thought and went on stage to get started off with my painting. Surprisingly, at the end of it all, when the results were announced the winning duo was Sam and myself! We both congratulated each other on stage, got some photographs clicked and called it a day.
The next day at college, I saw Sam again. As luck would have it, he had joined my college as a lateral entry and was in the same class as me! To be honest, my eyes were on him throughout our classes. It was during a free period that day when Sam walked up to me and started making conversation. He seemed extremely friendly and easygoing. We mostly spoke about the painting competition that day. Gradually, as we chatted up everyday, we both became quite friendly with one another. We even started sitting together in class – something that made all the other girls envious of me, since I had the most good-looking guy of class seated right next to me.
One day, Sam didn’t land up at college. I didn’t message or call him to find out whey he was absent that day. However, once 4-5 days passed and he still didn’t come to college, I decided to give him a call and find out for myself. His phone was switched off, and that drove me to go to his place and check up on him there. I reached his house and found the main door locked. This got me worried but there was nothing else I could do. Then, all of a sudden, that very day, I got a call from an unknown number. It was Sam’s sister who told me that he had met with an accident and was recovering in hospital. My heart skipped a beat when I heard that and then I made a dash to the hospital where Sam was admitted.
I found Sam unconscious on the hospital bed and his sister was by his side. After speaking with her for a while, I asked her to go and eat something at the hospital canteen. It was after she left the room, that I heard Sam’s voice. ‘I love you,’ is what he said to me as soon as he regained consciousness. These words and him finally waking up was such a pleasant surprise for me. After this, I stayed by his side for weeks as he recovered, I cooked him healthy food and accompanied him for multiple health checkups.
He was fit and fine in a matter of a few weeks, and then it was time for my 22nd birthday! On the day, as I reached college, I realized that none of my friends remembered that it was a special one for me, not even Sam. The day had passed and even Sara wasn’t home when I got back. As I was ready to go to bed, I got a call from Sam’s sister. She had called to ask if I had heard from Sam. She said that his phone is switched off and that that was getting her worried. I obviously got worried too and immediately left for his house to check if he was there and all was well.
Upon reaching there, I found the main door to his house open and all the lights switched off. I was a bit scared to enter the house but I did, and as I switched on the lights, I heard a loud ‘Happy Birthday!’ All my college friends, Sara, Sam and his sister were present there, and it was a surprise birthday party planned by Sam!
We had a great night as all of us danced, drank and ate. It was at the end of the evening, as Sam and I were in the middle of a conversation, that he went down on one knee and asked me to marry him! I could hardly believe what was happening, and quickly said a ‘Yes!’ We’re now married and living our happily ever after.
