No matter which part of the world we settle down, when it comes to bridal outfits, we always rely on our favourite designers back home in India. So when Simrat Rai, based out of Auckland, New Zealand had her roka ceremony last year, she had a similar ordeal. But thanks to FaceTime, she found exactly what she was looking for. Her roka outfit arrived just a week before her wedding!! Over to Simrat now…
The date for my roka was fixed for the 2nd of September, 2016. The ceremony was in Auckland and it was almost impossible for me to travel to India in between all the wedding preparations.. That left me with just one option...FaceTime! I was aware that everything looks great on social media, but after 3 months of constant scouting, I finally found my dream roka outfit. I reached out to my maami, who is based out of Chandigarh, to help me out with the selection She did the running around on my behalf and visited various popular boutiques and bridal stores. Once there, she would send me pictures or FaceTime every time she spotted something really gorgeous.
I was pretty clear of what I had in mind. I wanted an anarkali gown in a subtle colour which was elegant yet contemporary. I was hesitant to wear a dark coloured lehenga on my roka as I had envisioned shades of red and green for my wedding day. A blush pink or pastel outfit with minimal work is what I was looking for.
After viewing endless options, it was at Poshak, Sector 17, Chandigarh that an outfit caught my eye. It was a baby pink floor length anarkali that I fell in love with. It had a voluminous skirt, silver-grey embroidery and net sleeves with elegant swarovski work on it. Coincidently, Poshak happened to also be the same store from where my mom had purchased her roka outfit almost 23 years ago! Seeing that as a good omen, I asked my aunt to go ahead and place the order.
The dress arrived from India exactly a week before the function. I had given my measurements to the sales person over the phone and the outfit sure did fit like a dream. They had done a beautiful job with the work and the fittings. I am happy that I took a leap of faith to finally witness something so beautiful!
Simrat Rai is all set to tie the knot with her fiance, Rataksh Sikka on the 28th of April, 2018. Can’t wait to see all her other outfits too! Good luck, you two!
