While the Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer Chennai Express gave us a glimpse into the beauty of Munnar in recent years, there’s no denying that ‘God’s Own Country’ has a charm of its own that has also inspired stills in movies like Gupt, Life of Pi, and Nishabd as well.

The backdrop shows us the beautiful Pangong Lake in Ladakh, that has since been a tourist hotspot for Bollywood fans. Ladakh has also been a popular location for movies such as Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Lakshya and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, among many others.

For every 80s music lover ever, the musical Mamma Mia catapulted Greece into the limelight for tourism. Shot in the gorgeous island of Skopelos, the movie became an instant hit with audiences around the world, making the island a prime destination for tourists everywhere. Films like Before Midnight, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and Bollywood favourites like Bang Bang and Chalte Chalte were also shot in the postcard-perfect regions of Greece.

The movie Sex And The City 2 showed us the ultimate dream of travelling to an exotic destination with our BFFs. While Samantha, in the movie, says they are travelling to Abu Dhabi, the crew was not able to film in the United Arab Emirates and hence made their way to Morocco. The scene when Carrie meets her ex-flame Aidan was filmed in the Merrakech Medina and the women stayed at La Mamounia Hotel which is a lavish 5-star hotel just outside the Medina walls.

The serene Maiden’s Cove Beach in Capetown set the scene for the foot-tapping score ‘Tumhi Ho Bandhu’ from the movie Cocktail. The spot is known for its exquisite view of Table Mountain and the Twelve Apostles, as well as its view of the Atlantic Ocean. Cape Town is also known to be a hub for several Hollywood movies including Blood Diamond, Blended, and Avengers: Age Of Ultron.

9. Salzburg, Austria

It was in the Mehlweg meadow south of Salzburg in Marktschellenberg, Germany that we heard a twirling Julie Andrews tell us that the ‘Hills Are Alive With The Sound of Music’. The 1965 classic was shot in various parts of Austria including Salzkammergut, Nonnberg Abbey, and Residenzplatz, to name a few.

10. Sólheimasandur, Iceland

In the recent times, Rohit Shetty’s Dilwale takes the cake for one of the most scenic songs shot for a Bollywood movie, as the black sands Sólheimasandur in south Iceland provided the most visually appealing background to ‘Gerua’. The abandoned airplane in the song has actually become so popular, that access to it has now been limited. Iceland was also popularised by the success of The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty in 2013.
