Avinash and I had been friends all through college life. We got along really well and people often mistook our friendship for something else. Though there were moments I actually thought about Avinash as more than just a friend, I never had the guts to tell him that, because I didn’t want to ruin our friendship.
After college, he moved to Mumbai for further studies and I stayed back in Delhi. The distance didn’t have much of an effect on our friendship. We would often talk on the phone or Skype every now and then.
It was during my winter break that I decided to visit Mumbai. Other than Avinash, I had a couple of other friends there too. I was staying with Nisha, another friend of mine. Since Avinash was working on his internship during that time, we didn’t get time to meet all through the week. It was only on the weekend that he asked me to spend the day with him. So, I did.
We started with breakfast at a fancy place near Marine Drive and then made our way to different places in South Mumbai, ending up in Bandra where he was staying with three other guys. Since it was a weekend everyone was going out for a couple of drinks so I tagged along.
It was actually great to get to know his new friends. All the time we had been physically apart seemed to slowly melt away as we went back to what we used to be. I remember laughing a lot that evening and when we finally got back to his place, it was already 1:00 am in the morning. ‘It’s really late, I would say you just crash here and go tomorrow morning instead.’ he said. His friends agreed and they decided that Avi and I could sleep on the mattresses in one room while the rest of them shared the other room and the living room area.
Spending a night with my guy bestie really wasn’t that big a deal. Avi and I had spent lots of them together. We had slept on the same mattress tonnes of time after college parties. But somehow this seemed different. For starters, we weren’t drunk enough to just pass. We were actually quite sober and there was this sexual tension around that I definitely could feel.
We were talking about something, the lights were off but there was some moonlight streaming through the window. So I could see the outline of his figure as he talked. Honestly, I didn’t even realize when we got so close that our lips were inches away and I don’t remember when we started kissing. Neither of us said anything, it just happened. ‘I have to say…’ he finally broke away from the kiss and muttered ‘...this isn’t just some one night stand with a friend for me. I have been meaning to do this for years.’ ‘Well, it feels like you are right on time!’ I replied kissing him again.
The rest of the night went away in a daze of a crushed bedsheet and a lot of pulling closer! We laughed and talked and kissed and blamed each other for waiting this long. The next morning when I was about to leave he leaned in closer and said ‘I really like you. I hope you know that. And I hope you know you are not getting rid of me anytime soon.’ I gave him a peck on his cheek and replied ‘I won’t try to either!’
It’s been a year, we’re still going strong all thanks to that one night!
