We had known each other for almost a decade now. We met in school through Karan’s sister, who happened to be my really close friend. Though we started dating in school, at that time it was almost trivial because we were in boarding schools and hardly got to meet. The real time we spent together started after school, when we moved to London. From living close by, living in together to moving to Bombay and travelling to the most exotic locations in the world as our annual anniversary celebrations, it’s been one long journey.
It was almost clear to us that we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together, but work, career and education were always higher on the list of priorities and for the right reasons. He and I were both inclined towards doing bigger things in life and thus I always motivated him to move ahead and not look back.
He started his own business and was almost leading a nomadic life for two years. Off-site travel for shoots, not knowing when he was going to come back and sudden changes in plans - that was usual. Of course, he would make it back on special days and we’d managed to sneak in some vacations but after some time it started bothering me. So, I would say that our relationship was a bit strained in the middle too.
But they say, that through certain circumstances, you realize what the relationship stands for. The last time we had a chat about us, it actually led us to break up. Though, in my heart I knew it was temporary, I took this opportunity to be really sure of what I wanted and see what was lying ahead. We had grown up together, we had become individual people with similar tastes but varied preferences.
This time, we really took our time and pondered over the situation and understood that we had to make it.
After years of discussion on who would propose, how would it happen and how to make it exciting, finally we were off to Thailand for a shoot.
The common link between us was his sister, so I decided to propose to Karan in Thailand and of course, needed help with that.
We reached Thailand. I had organized a Scuba diving session in which I was going to propose to him underwater. Placards were ready and I had got a ring too.
Everything was going according to plan, but suddenly when we reached underwater, Karan started taking out these placards that had romantic little things written on it. I knew where that was going. Though I was totally surprised, I literally had to take away his thunder by asking him to stop and proposing to him instead. We have it all recorded. He had absolutely no idea!
While I was planning this exciting proposal, he had also been planning something similar with his sister. So, I proposed to my boyfriend underwater and he did the same! It couldn’t have been more exciting. But the biggest surprise awaited us at the surface.
Both our families had come to Thailand, decorated a yacht and were ready to celebrate because they knew that we were finally sealing the deal. We came up and finally said ‘the words’ to each other and exchanged rings.
It was just how I wanted it! We both wanted it that way. That was surely the happiest day of my life!
