What Is Capsule Wardrobe & How You Can Build It: A Guide

Let me start with a little confession, I am a hardcore fashionista who’s always believed in ‘the more the merrier’ when it came to all things fashion. I used to think the more clothes I owned the more fashionable I’d be. That was until I came across this interesting concept of the capsule wardrobe. It instantly opened my eyes and made me realise that I need a sea of clothing, just pieces I adore and wear regularly.

For the unversed, creating a capsule wardrobe is all about embracing the ‘less is more’ philosophy. It isn’t just limited to reducing clutter but also practicing sustainability to create timeless elegance. A capsule wardrobe also focuses on quality rather than quantity, creating a meaningful piece each time.

If you are also planning to embrace this minimalistic approach then below is a small guide for you to build your own capsule wardrobe. Take a look:

1. Neutral-coloured tops:

You can start by picking up neutral-coloured tops as these are the foundations of a minimalist wardrobe. Choose tops in colours like white, black, gray, or navy blue as they are versatile and can be easily mixed and matched with other pieces.

2. Basic T-shirts:

Next in line would be opting for basic T-shirts. Look for well-made T-shirts with a good fit and opt for neutral colours such as white, black, and gray. These basic T-shirts can be worn on their own or layered under shirts, sweaters, or jackets.

3. Classic button-down shirts:

A white button-down shirt is undoubtedly timeless and versatile. It can be dressed up with tailored trousers or worn casually with jeans. You can pick a chambray or striped shirt for added variety to my wardrobe.

4. Tailored blazer:

A capsule wardrobe cannot be complete with a tailored blazer as it can instantly add sophistication to any outfit. Choose one in neutral colours like black, navy, and charcoal gray. These blazers are versatile and can be worn over dresses, with jeans, or paired with trousers for a polished look.

5. Versatile bottoms:

Another factor that comes in when building a capsule wardrobe is investing in versatile bottoms that can be dressed up or down. Dark-wash jeans are classic and can be worn for various occasions. Tailored trousers are perfect for work or more formal events, while a versatile skirt or pair of shorts adds variety to your wardrobe.

A little black dress is a wardrobe staple that never goes out of style. It’s that timeless piece of clothing that can be worn for any occasion. Look for a silhouette that flatters your body type and could be accessorised to suit different occasions.

7. Comfortable shoes:

I agree we all want to build a huge footwear collection. But trust me, choosing a pair of shoes that’s both stylish and comfortable can make a huge. Black pumps are a versatile option that can be worn with dresses or pantsuits. White sneakers are perfect for casual outings, while ankle boots add a touch of edge to any outfit.

8. Outerwear:

Depending on the climate, you can invest in outerwear pieces that will keep you warm and stylish. A trench coat is a classic choice that adds sophistication to any look. A denim jacket is perfect for layering in transitional weather, while a wool coat provides warmth during colder months.

9. Accessories:

Keep your accessories simple and versatile. A classic watch adds a timeless touch to any outfit. A leather belt cinches the waist and adds structure to dresses or trousers. A neutral-colored scarf can be worn in multiple ways to accessorise different looks. And a structured handbag in a neutral shade complements any outfit.

Last but not least, investing in pieces made from high-quality fabrics like cotton, linen, wool, and silk is all you need. These materials are durable and comfortable to wear. So I look for well-made garments that will last for years to come, even with frequent wear.

By following this small guide, you can build a wardrobe that’s not only mindful but also tailored to your personal style, versatile, and easy to manage.
