The day for which we all had been so eagerly waiting for was finally here! I woke up super early in the morning. The freshers’ party was organised by the second year and it was going to be fun and really exciting! And for me, the first thing that struck me was how was I going to confess my feelings to him.
I woke up, had breakfast and while we were eating, I told Kimaya. ‘I’m telling Aditya everything today. I’ve made up my mind and I’m totally prepared!’ I continued. She asked me, ‘What exactly are you going to tell him!? That you love him?’, she asked. ‘I’ll just tell him that I like him since a long time.’
The plan was that Kimaya will signal Aditya to meet me in a corner, and I will tell him when we’re alone. Everyone was looking their best and I was too, but something else was on my mind… And I was too nervous to think about it. I was stuck with the question, ‘Will he come today?’
Kimaya and I hailed a cab and rushed to the venue. As we walked into the hall, I met so many friends. We clicked pictures, posed, praised a few friends and judged a few. But amidst all of this, my eyes were still searching for him.
The grand entry of the freshers’ was about to end and still no sign of his arrival. ‘Everything is a waste,’ I thought to myself. ‘ I am not feeling well, I have a headache. Let’s go back after lunch’ I told Kimaya.
A few minutes later, some of his batchmates arrived and there he was, walking hurriedly to join them. He was wearing a light blue shirt paired with blue denims, looking the most handsome amongst his fellow classmates.
‘We don’t need to go back now, right?’ Kimaya said teasingly. ‘Noooo’, I said smiling shyly.
The session ended and everyone was getting photographs clicked when I told her, ‘NOW! Now is the perfect time; he’s sitting alone there. What are you doing here?!’
I immediately told Kimaya that I would be waiting near the water cooler and she should direct Adi that way.
Kimaya went inside and asked Adi to go near the water cooler. ‘Aditya, go near the water cooler’ in a trepid voice she said. ‘What!? Why?’ he asked. She told him that I wanted to talk to him.
I was standing on the stairs waiting for him with a million thoughts running through my mind. I was marching up and down the stairs when I saw him walk up to me and say, ‘Hey, what’s up?’ I stumbled on a step and told him ‘I want to talk to you about something’.
‘I want to confess something,’ and breaking the eye contact, I said, ‘I like you, from the first year itself’. Still stealing glances I gathered all of my courage to look at him. ‘Oh… I never expected you would actually confess this…!’ he blushed. ‘But I had an idea!’ he said sheepishly. ‘Really? You knew this?!’, I exclaimed.
‘You first have a glass of water and calm down,’ he said, pouring me some water into the glass. He then said that almost everyone knew that I liked him and just the way I looked at him made it evident. He just said we could be friends first and then take things forward, if at all.
Our friends forced us to dance together and his in-between response was making me feel a little awkward. Even though when I told him I liked him, I was ecstatic, but his confused words were enough to make me doubtful. But somewhere, I knew he’ll reciprocate. So I wanted him to feel the way I do and I was ready to wait. The next day, I woke up, tied my hair and checked my WhatsApp as usual.
‘You looked great,’ he had texted the night before. And let’s just say that was a start to many other great things that were yet to happen.
