#BeautyDiaries: Why I Hate *And* Love Colouring My Hair…

It’s a blessing to have naturally gorgeous hair. After all, your hair really can make or break your look. And imagine having hair that looks salon styled every single day?! Guess what, I really was blessed with hair like that. My hair growth was great – I had a thick, voluminous mane with a natural bounce in it. I just had to run a comb through my tresses and voila, I was ready to attend weddings and parties. The compliments never stopped coming my way! And the best part was, I never had an extensive hair care regime. I’d use a basic drugstore-bought shampoo, and for my weekly champis, I used coconut oil.

My hair was great but soon enough I got bored of it. I wanted a change of look and that’s when I decided that colouring my hair was the way to go. Despite my mom’s warnings, I went ahead and got brown and red streaks. The worst part? I didn’t think it was necessary to invest in those super expensive products specifically for coloured hair. I came back home and flaunted my new look. Everyone loved it and so did I. But one hair wash and I was in for a shock. My hair looked so, so dry. Never before had I seen my hair in this condition. It was all dried out and lacked lustre. Thankfully, it was just a few streaks and my mom’s amazing home remedies saved me (well, almost!). The sheen and bounce in my mane was back with a bang.

Months later, thanks to my fabulous hair, I got an offer to model for a leading hair colour brand. The contract stated that they’d cut and colour my hair. Not once, not twice but almost 3-4 times in a month. I spent almost a week contemplating and finally gave in. After all, it was my first big modelling offer and I didn’t want to say no. And so the colouring began. I was given an all over mud brown look with fringes and honestly, I hated it! But it was work and I had signed up for it. When my contract expired a month later, they coloured my hair back to the original black and while I was relieved, my hair was ruined… and this time, forever.

I tried everything – from salon treatments to expensive hair care products. I spent weekends indulging in home remedies and I even consulted a dermatologist. But the damage was done…less and dull. I had crazy hairfall and I had and make the best of it. So here I am, with hair that really does have a mi dandruff and my natural curls turned frizzy. Almost a year after trying to get my lovely locks back, I gave up. I decided that it was time to settle with whatnd of its ow to the extent that it became almost impossible to leave my hair open. My hair looked so lifen. It looks good on some days, and oh-so-unhealthy on others. And yes, it’s almost impossible to step out for an occasion without getting a blow dry first.

Oh and BTW, last year the boredom struck again and I got my hair coloured a fab shade of chocolate red. The only difference being, now I understand that colour-treated locks need extra love and care. I take good care of my coloured hair now and trust me, it looks pretty decent! It’s not the same as it used to be, but decent nevertheless.
