‘What kind of lingerie should I be wearing under my wedding outfit?’ We’ve had quite a few brides ask us this question. After having spent a whopping amount on your wedding lehenga, you want your bridal lingerie too to be just perfect. It’s got to flatter your body, fit you like your second skin and you need to feel good in it! So for all the brides-to-be, here are some important tips on getting it right!
1. When to shop?
When it comes to your wedding day lingerie, there is no hurry. You could keep it as one of your last purchases. Ideally, it’s best to wait for your first lehenga fittings to know exactly what kind of undergarments you’ll need. You’ll be able to tell the kind of straps you need, the style of underwear required to flatter your curves and how much support you need in terms of the bra.
2. Padded blouse or bra?
Stuck between the two? There are two ways to look at this. A padded blouse ensures you have no peekaboo moments with the straps. At the same time, the right type and size of bra will support your breasts better and give them a more defined shape. If your blouse style allows, go in for a bra, but if the design is sleeveless or deep-necked, it’s better to opt for pads.
3. Experiments with shapewear
A little bulge making you feel conscious? Invest in shapewear, then! Good shapewear is an ideal way to give a smooth finish to your curves. However, make sure you consult someone at the store to get one in the perfect size. One size small and it could make you feel super uneasy and give you unflattering lines underneath your wedding day finery.
4. Go seamless!
Seamless undergarments are such a blessing! Since most brides usually have lehengas with lots of flare and layers, the seams of your undergarments showing is not really likely. But in case you’re wearing a single layer or a fine material, it’s good to go seamless. Seamless panties usually have laser cut edges that are barely visible.
5. Do get measured!
The fact that a majority of Indian women wear the wrong bra size is not really news. So, girls, even if you think you know your size or the bra that you wear is comfortable, get measured again! You don’t want bulges, ugly strap marks or bras that don’t even give you proper support. Trust us, you’ll feel the difference!
6. The look does matter…
But don’t make it your prime concern. Buy a set or separates that make you feel good along with being comfortable and well fitted. Yes, as a bride you would want something more seductive, but you can always change into it later! Remember, you’ll be in this innerwear for a few hours, all through the shaadi ceremony, so comfort comes first.
7. Check the material
Yes, ladies, while silky panties may look and feel great when you try them on, it’s not an ideal choice for long hours. Materials such as nylon and lycra trap moisture and heat and can make you feel sweaty down there. Also, you don’t want to end up with rashes! Opt for breathable fabrics such as cotton. If you’re wearing something lacy, make sure that it does not feel uneasy against your skin.
8. Trying a new thing?
We’d suggest you avoid any new kind of lingerie if you aren’t already used to the style/ texture. Silicone cups, nipple pasties, thongs, etc., may feel uncomfortable the first time around. In fact, a lot of women just can’t wear these and often end up in slightly awkward situations. If there really is no other way out, wear them frequently before D-day to get a hang of it.
9. Colour basics
What should be the colour of your underwear and bra? Many brides wear heavy fabrics and dark colours, so mismatch it isn’t really a problem, but do keep a few things in mind. If it’s a morning ceremony or if you’re wearing a light fabric or colour, your undergarments can show. Also, the harsh lights at the venue can sometimes play spoilsport. To be safe, try not buying anything too much in contrast to your lehenga or anything too bright. The best option, of course, is to wear nude-toned lingerie that’s as close to your skin tone as possible.
10. Last minute changes
Last minute changes happen all the time! Specially since many brides often go on a fitness regimen to get in shape before the wedding. Do find out about the exchange policy of the store you are shopping from and keep all the receipts safe with you. Lingerie can be an expensive affair and you don’t want to end up with pieces that no longer fit!
