#MyStory: How I *Finally* Found The Man Of My Dreams…

We were best friends-turned-lovers. Everything went well in our relationship but one hurdle I faced was that Aditya, (my boyfriend at the time) didn’t ever talk about or even consider a future with me. And as for me, I always dreamt of a beautiful wedding with the man I love. This difference of opinion led to fights between us time and again. With time, these differences and arguments only increased, and eventually, we broke up.

At that time, it wasn’t easy for me to get over a 3 year old relationship. I understood that us breaking up was a step in the right direction because forcing anyone into marriage would lead to a complicated future. Besides, I couldn’t ask my parents to wait it out for something that wasn’t certain at all.

I hail from a Brahmin family, and my parents started finding a suitable match for me once I turned 24. After we split, I told my parents that unlike earlier, now I was ready to marry the guy they choose for me, provided I like him too. I went through many profiles and spoke to many guys but none of them seemed appealing to me.

Now, here’s how I met the man of my dreams. One morning, after I returned from my yoga class, my mother told me that someone who had seen my profile on a matrimonial site wanted to visit us and meet. I ignored this because I assumed it was one of the many calls my mum received every day.

That evening, my dad showed me pictures of the guy my mother had mentioned earlier and he looked quite cute. He was one year older than me and everything about him seemed okay, so I agreed to meet him.

We finally met on Christmas day in 2015. He wasn’t shy or introverted; he was good-looking and had a very optimistic approach towards life. The way he spoke was impressive and he seemed to have tremendous respect for women. I decided to be clear with him and told him about my previous relationship. To this he said it didn’t matter to him at all.

Honestly, I’d fallen for him instantly and he said he liked me as well. The next day I expressed our interest in each other to my parents. However, he didn’t mention any such thing to his family and they informed my father that they needed some time to think over it. I was quite taken aback and felt pretty hurt too.

The next day was my birthday and my excitement for this special day had died out by now. It was like any other day, until, all of a sudden in the evening, I got a call from an unknown number. I was hesitant but I answered it anyway.

“Hello,” I could not recognize the voice on the line. “Remember me? We met day before yesterday?” he asked. My heart skipped a beat. How could I forget him?! “Oh yeah! Hi. How are you?” I responded, trying very hard to remain calm even though there were a million questions in my head. “I’m good,” he said, adding, “It’s your birthday today, right? Wish you a very happy birthday!”

I thanked him and didn’t know what to say to him after that. Then, he said, “I have a little something for you. It could be a gift to both of us.” I waited for him to continue. “Will you marry me?” he popped the question. By now, I had reached a point when I couldn’t feel the ground under my feet. I wasn’t even sure if I heard it right. “Are you there?” he asked, to which I replied, “Yes. OMG! Of course I will.”

Turns out, he wanted to propose to me on my birthday. “I fell in love with you the day we met,” he said to me. I was surprised by all that was happening with me – it was like a fairy tale. This was undoubtedly the best 25th birthday gift ever!

As we got to know each other, I realized he was, indeed, the man of my dreams. We have been married for 6 months now and I fall a little more in love with him with each passing day. After this, I have learnt that everything happens for a reason. You never know what’s in store for you.
