You were told that acne is just a teenage thing, right? Here you are, in your twenties and wondering why you’re still sprouting zits and suffering from a thousand other skin problems. Women in their twenties suffer from innumerable skin issues, mostly because of the modern lifestyle which involves stress and sleepless nights. What you do in your 20s will definitely affect how young or old your skin looks later on. So we’ve come up with 13 common skincare mistakes that women in their twenties generally make. Avoid these skin sins now in order to have healthy skin at every age.
Skin Sin #1: Picking at your skin
We know it’s difficult to not touch your skin but it’s one of the most common skincare mistakes you can make! Touching your face continuously can lead to more and more breakouts as you are transferring the dirt from your hands to your face.
Skin Sin #2: Not getting enough sleep
A person should sleep for at least 7-8 hours but most of us don’t follow this. Our bodies need enough time to release all the stress and tiredness of the day. Lack of sleep will result in dark circles, unhealthy skin and obviously, tiredness which will definitely show on your face.
Skin Sin #3: Not working out
Exercising does not only help in losing weight or maintaining it. It also helps in relieving stress and takes out the toxins from your body in the form of sweat. Setting up a workout schedule is the BEST thing you can do for your skin. Even something as simple as an evening walk can work wonders if done regularly. Exercising is a sure-shot way of bringing a healthy glow to your skin. Also read: What To Eat (And What Not To!) To Make Your Skin *Glow*
Skin Sin #4: Smoking and consuming alcohol
Smoking sucks out the oxygen from your body, wrinkles the facial skin and speeds up the ageing process too. Nobody wants that, right? Excess consumption of alcohol is unhealthy too as it seriously dehydrates your skin, leading to dullness and premature ageing.
Skin Sin #5: Slacking the sunscreen
You reckon that sunscreen is not needed as you’re not going to be in the sun for too long or winters will be here soon as well. But do you know this is possibly the biggest skincare mistake you can make? You should be using sunscreen all year round, even if you aren’t going to be in the sun all day, as even the slightest exposure to the sun can lead to dryness, wrinkles and discolouration of the skin. Also, do NOT forget to apply some on your neck and arms!
Skin Sin #6: Drinking less water
Haven’t you heard - water is the elixir of life? It is a must to drink plenty of water for glowing skin. Water helps in clearing out the toxins from your body, hence, giving it that glow you always wanted.
Skin Sin #7: Going to bed with makeup on
Isn’t it an obvious skin sin? Sleeping with makeup leads to clogging of pores which results in acne. Make sure to remove your makeup either using a makeup remover, face wipes or coconut oil.
Skin Sin #8: Skipping meals
You are not only harming your body but your skin as well by skipping meals. Your skin is a breathing organ and it needs nourishment in order to look healthy and fresh. Skipping meals can actually lead to skin dryness, dullness and premature ageing.
As much as you love some caffeine in your system (all of us do!), it is important to cut down its intake for healthy skin. Too much coffee can dehydrate your skin and result in dryness. Go ahead and curb those cravings with healthy alternatives such as fruit juice and coconut water.
Skin Sin #11: Over-exfoliating
Exfoliation is good for our skin as it helps in getting rid of excess oil but don’t get too carried away and over-exfoliate. Being overzealous with exfoliating can cause irritation and it can rob your skin of its natural glow as it also removes the natural oil required for the skin.
Skin Sin #12: Popping your pimples
Again, the most common skin sin of all! Yes, we know how irritating and annoying it is when you spot an zit out of the blue. No matter what, don’t even think about popping your pimples because not only will it hurt but it will also leave a scar on your skin and acne scars are the worst!
Skin Sin #13: Getting used to hot showers
Taking showers with extremely hot water can dry up your skin. If you have sensitive skin, taking hot water baths can cause reddening. It’s better to use lukewarm water while taking a shower to keep your skin healthy and happy. Images: Shutterstock
