A lot of people have been talking about Co-washing, or washing hair using only conditioner. But what exactly is it? Will it help transform your hair? We answer all your questions!

1. What is conditioner-only washing or Co-washing?

It’s exactly what it sounds like. Conditioner-only washing refers to the beauty practice of not using any shampoo on one’s hair. Instead, hair is cleaned with cleansing conditioners to restore moisture to the locks and avoid damage from the harmful chemicals found in most shampoos.

2. What kind of conditioners should be used for Co-washing?

Co-washing requires specially formulated conditioners called cleansing conditioners. These conditioners are free from sulfates and don’t lather too much. They’re also super gentle and moisturizing to make sure that your hair is not stripped of its natural oils.

3. What’s the whole idea behind conditioner-only washing?

People have become more aware about the sheer number of chemicals that most shampoos contain. These chemicals strip the hair of its natural oils and lead to dry, brittle hair and breakage. They also lead to product build-up which weighs the hair down and makes it lifeless and dull. Cleansing conditioners, on the other hand, are very gentle and free from sulfates, parabens and silicones. They also don’t lather, which means lesser friction while washing hair, which in turn means less breakage!

4. What are the benefits of Co-washing?

Co-washing has been shown to have a host of benefits. These include:

a. Reduced hair breakage

Shampooing requires you to lather and rinse, which causes tension on the hair. Conditioners melt into the hair and are rinsed out easily, meaning that hair doesn’t snap and break off easily!

b. No more tears, tangles and knots

The immense amount of moisture that cleansing conditioners deliver to the hair make it smooth and soft. This means hair that is not tangled and knotted up!

c. Goodbye flaky scalp

Dry and itchy scalp? This method of washing has been shown to take care of that as well!

d. Better hair growth

People who have tried Co-washing say that they noticed a definite improvement in their hair growth. The fact that it reduces breakages and improves overall hair quality leads to hair that grows faster.

e. Softer hair

You will notice an overall improvement in the texture of your hair as it becomes more moisturized and consequently softer and more manageable.

5. How should I wash my hair with just conditioner?

We’ve always been taught to condition only the hair ends and not the roots and scalp, but that’s not how cleansing conditioners work. They are perfectly safe to use on the scalp. In fact, they should be used on the scalp. Co-washing is extremely simple. Here’s how you should do it:

Step 1: Take some cleansing conditioner and massage it into your scalp.

Step 2: Use a wide-tooth comb to distribute the conditioner evenly through the hair.

Step 3: Let it sit for 3 to 4 minutes and then wash off with lukewarm water.

Step 4: Towel dry your hair and you’re good to go!

6. What kind of hair should I have to try Co-washing?

Anybody can try co-washing, but it is especially beneficial for people with dry and damaged hair, or chemically-treated hair. People with curly hair can also benefit from it since it leaves the curls more defined.

7. How often should I Co-wash?

The number of times you wash your hair depends upon a lot of factors - the kind of hair you have, how you style it, the weather and climate, the length and more. A lot of people like to alternate their conditioner-only washes with regular shampoo washes.

Well, that sums up everything you need to know about conditioner-only washing. Go ahead, pamper your hair. :)
