Waxing 101: Chocolate, Rica Or Regular - What’s Best For *You*?

Ladies, we’ve all resigned ourselves to the fact that at least once every month we must religiously show up for a waxing session and there are no two ways about it. By now, your waxing lady may have recommended trying flavoured wax for a number of reasons. Like us, you’ve probably been wondering what the deal is with chocolate wax, strawberry wax, white chocolate wax – it seems like every time you go there’s a new flavour! Well, we tell you what the big deal is and whether you should pick one over regular wax for a better, less painful experience. It’s possible!

Regular Wax

This simple sugar and lemon mix has been around since ages. We’ve all been using this traditional wax for years and years.

It definitely gets our hair out from the roots but can be painful. It can also leave your skin red and bumpy afterwards; and if you have sensitive skin, then the redness can last for up to a day or 2 after your appointment. Regular wax, however, doesn’t take out thin, tiny hairs smoothly - you will have to go over the area again and again, which can be painful.

Chocolate Wax

Chocolate wax and other flavoured waxes are made from natural ingredients like cocoa, soya bean oil, almond oil, glycerin, vitamins and olive oil.

  • It is anti-inflammatory.

  • It causes little or no redness or rashes.

  • It is more effective in removing tiny hairs and ingrowths.

  • It removes suntan.

  • It has a post-wax oil that smoothly gets rid of any wax residue and stickiness.

  • It suits all skin types, even sensitive skin.

  • It leaves your skin soft and glowing.

  • It is pricier than regular wax.

Rica Wax

Also known as white chocolate wax, this first-made-in-Italy wax is vegetable oil and plant-based.

  • It is 100% free off Colophony, which is the sap or sticky substance that comes from pine or spruce trees and is the main ingredient that usually causes redness and allergies.

  • It is gentler on the skin as it doesn’t need to be heated as long as regular wax.

  • It comes with a pre-wax gel to clean the skin and make it more receptive to the wax.

  • It has great hair gripping strength, and will hardly need to go over the same area again.

  • It suits all skin types, even super sensitive skin.

  • It leaves your skin soft and glowing.

  • It is messier than regular wax.

  • It is pricier than regular wax, especially since it has to be imported from Italy.

Verdict: Clearly, regular wax is passé and rightly so. We’re willing to spend extra for wax that won’t irritate our skin and leave it inflamed. Plus, flavoured waxes remove even stubborn hair more easily and lessen your chances of in-growth. All parlours offer chocolate wax and other flavours, while Rica wax is available at most but not all salons.
