1. RIP native Hindi dialect
A short stint as a Hyderabadi citizen, and your native Hindi dialect will feel like a long forgotten memory. Your tongue will, on its own, learn to twist and turn in weird ways to churn out Hyderabadi Hindi – which is why your family will raise eyebrows and give you uncomfortable stares once you go back home, if you aren’t actually from Hyderabad!
2. Akka, Anna and Telugu raadu
Ironically, the very first thing people learn when they come to Hyderabad, is saying “Telugu raadu” – which is how you say “I do not understand Telugu” in Telugu. All uncles and bhaiyas become Anna and aunties become Akka. For most people, that’s pretty much it as far as learning Telugu is concerned.
3. Fast and furious all the way
If ever Fast and Furious 9 is made, it should be made on the roads of Hyderabad, starring the autowalas of Hyderabad. They have an unmatched talent of meandering through traffic jams at 80 Kmph and seating anywhere between 7 to 10 people in a normal 3 seater auto!
4. Food love: Veggies, please excuse
Food in Hyderabad is love. Except if you are vegetarian. Oh, you are eating vegetarian biryani and kebabs? Never mind, they are just pulao and pakodas.
5. Of banana plates and no spoons
Out of all the eyeball popping things that you will see and hear about this city, the most “Are you friggin kidding me?” reactions will come from going to certain diners and traditional weddings. You are sure to go “WOW” when you see banana leaf plates and “WTF!” when you don’t see spoons – because tradition dicates that food tastes best when eaten with hands.
6. Everything is Hi-Tech
In Hyderabad, everything is Hi-Tech. We have a Hi-Tech city, paanwalas whose shops are named Hi-Tech Paan and food stalls called Hi-Tech Bawarchi. It’s Hyderabadi swag to put Hi-Tech in front of every possible thing. Good thing people are spared. So far.
