Ask any girl with curly hair, what would be the one thing she would like to change about herself; It will probably be her hair! I was once one of those girls, but I’ve grown to LOVE my hair.
All my life, I dealt with frizzy, curly hair which were always so hard to tame. There wasn’t much I could do with them except tie them up in a ponytail. My hair always looked dry, and had no shine at all. I had the weirdest looking ponytail - it was like a fluffy ball of hair! I always envied those girls who had gorgeous spiral curls and wondered how they achieved them.
When I entered college, I was more than willing to experiment with my hair. I couldn’t sport that horrid ponytail hairstyle to college every single day! I turned to my humble friend - the internet and researched about curly hair.
From whatever I read, there were two things that appealed to me the most - first, using the appropriate products for my hair type, and second, not brushing my hair. The second one almost shocked me! It was against everything I had heard and been taught over the years. I read that brushing curly hair actually opens up the curls, and messes with the natural texture of the hair.
After much thought, I gave this weird, yet interesting theory a try. I washed my hair, applied conditioner, and used my fingers like a comb to spread the conditioner throughout my hair. After washing my hair, I used an old cotton t-shirt and dried my hair carefully, making sure I don’t tug at them a lot (that causes it to break). After that I applied serum in my hair and just let them dry. No combing, no brushing, nothing!
I was supposed to go out for lunch the next day, and I left my hair open. That was a BIG thing for me, as I don’t remember leaving my natural hair open ever! My friends actually pointed out that it looked like I had got my hair done at the parlour. The curls looked so bouncy and…. pretty! I repeated the same process every time I washed my hair, and my curls looked as gorgeous as ever each time!
It’s been almost 4 years now since I’ve been following this practice, and I would definitely recommend it to every girl with curly hair. With the right products and haircut, this no-brushing method is definitely going to be a lifesaver for you! I know it has been for me, the many compliments I get for my hair are proof of the same! :-D
