What Is Tightlining?

Tightlining is a technique where eyeliner is placed on your upper waterline, at the base of your to fill in the gaps between the lashes. It’s also known as invisible eyeliner and is a more subtle way of lining your eyes while giving some major definition.

What Do You Need to Tightline?

  • An eyeliner of your choice. You can tightline with any type of liner – pencil, gel or liquid.
  • A flat eyeliner brush if you’re using gel liner.

How To Tightline Your Eyes:

Step 1: Using your non-dominant hand, gently lift up your eyelid and use your pencil/brush or liquid liner along the roots of your lashes in dabs or strokes to fill in the gaps between them. If your eye starts watering, wait for a few seconds and then start again.

Step 2: Try not to blink for a few seconds to avoid it smudging. Use a q-tip to clean up any smudges. There should be no spaces between your lashes, they should appear fuller, darker and thicker.

Step 3: Curl your lashes and apply mascara.

Step 4: To tightline the lower lashline, simply line along the waterline.

A Few Things To Help Tightline

Stare Down

You can tilt your head backwards and angle your chin or gaze down into a mirror on a flat surface like a table so you’re looking down into it. This way you have a perfect view of the area you need to line.

Make Short Strokes

Line the roots of your eyelashes in short movements and not in one long movement to avoid irritating the eye. It is a very sensitive area after all and you don’t want your eyes to start watering.

Leave The Inner Corner

Begin tightlining from the outer corner and moving inwards. Avoid filling in the inner corner as that can make your eyes appear smaller. However, if you have wide set eyes then you should line it there to help them appear closer together.

Products To Try

Kohls and pencil liners are a good idea as their texture is soft enough to not poke you in the eye. Black or brown eyeliners that are long-lasting and waterproof are ideal. If you prefer using a gel liner, use a small brush and avoid getting too much product on it as you want it to look as natural as possible and if you want to go liquid, then a felt tip pen is great for better precision.
