BEWARE! 8 Everyday Fashion Choices That Are Hurting Your Back

Looking beautiful hurts sometimes – we all agree and cry about this. But when it comes to actually doing something about it, we tend to just wave it off. Well, stop for a minute and think about it – hard. Do you actually know how serious this “hurt” is? Especially to your back! You might be causing yourself long-term damage without even realizing it! Here are a few fashion choices from your everyday life that could be seriously hurting your back – please adopt with care!

1. The SO-Wrong Bra

It’s not just if you’re wearing the wrong size (which is a big NO), but also if you’re wearing skimpy, stringy bras too often. A thinner strap puts more pressure on your shoulders and back as there is less surface area for the weight to be spread over. Keep these aside for super-special occasions only and avoid them for daily wear!

2. High Heels, DUH

It’s very obvious, we know. But it’s necessary to mention this. And sure, they make your butt look great, but they’re also totally messing up your posture. Stiletto heels are just the worst, and if you like to wear heels often, you should look for alternatives like wedges or block heels. Of course, you can also try using cushioning pads to relieve some stress, and slip them off and give your feet a break every hour or so. And never forget to stretch!

3. Super-Tight Skinny Jeans

Skinny jeans are not ALL bad. But if you’re wearing ones that don’t give your legs any breathing room, they’re definitely not good for you. If they restrict your joints, they WILL put extra stress there – and also transfer the tension up your spine. Super-tight skinnies are also hampering blood circulation for your entire lower body! Try out a pair that have some lycra mixed in with denim as the stretch will give you the skinny look without hurting you! Also, for every day you slip into your skinnies, go with easy-fits the day after.

4. Chunky & Heavy Necklaces

We know you get tempted, we do TOO! But you have to agree: wear one of them for more than a couple of hours, and we start slouching automatically! A better option is to go for necklaces that may be chunky but are not made out of heavy metal. Even if it’s a metal necklace (they’re gorgeous, after all!), pick an option that’s hollow and not completely solid. This way, it still gives you the same look without bothering you too much. And if you have to wear the real deal, make sure you put it on only for the bare minimum time.

5. That Sexy Halter Top

Those adorable tie-up straps? They’re holding up a lot of weight! And digging into your shoulder and back too. This is, of course, SO much worse if you have a bigger bust and the weight just increases. Make sure to pair your halter top with a strapless bra that has a thick band, to make sure you get the support you need. Also, try T-backs as an alternative – they are definitely better for your back since there’s more even distribution of weight!

6. Super-Shaping Shapewear

Shapewear can make you look amazing – we tell you that often enough. But regular use of high control shapewear can be really bad for you. You are essentially restricting your body in a tiny space and that can put stress on your lower back. And some options are worse than the others, of course. A Level-1-control tummy tucker (which you could be wearing every other day) to smoothen out your curves would do barely any damage, whereas a Level-3-control corset should be saved only for (REALLY) special occassions. Also, make sure you’re always wearing shapewear of the right size and not one size smaller – even if it does make you look slimmer!

7. That Unnecessarily Large (And Heavy) Bag

Sit down every night and just remove the things from you bag that you don’t need! It’s a great practice to make sure your bag isn’t unnecessarily heavy and putting stress on your back. It could be something small as a pair of earring some days and as heavy as a laptop charger the other, but we often end up forgetting to remove them from our bags at night and then crib about it the whole of the next day. And, of course, not to mention the untold damage all that weight is doing, especially if you are using a single-strap bag, and one shoulder is weighed down more than the other. Backpacks are a great (and stylish!) alternative, especially if you’re in college and have to carry heavy books or a laptop.

8. The Fitted Pencil Skirt

This might come as a surprise to most people, but pencil skirts are a danger too! They don’t give your knees a lot of movement area, which ultimately results in strain on your lower back. Bending is difficult, and over a period of time, you’ll realize how it’s affecting your body. A better alternative is to make sure your skirt has a back vent or side slits to make it more comfortable to move around in, and to make sure you’re not wearing a pencil skirt more than a couple of times a week! Also, always look for a skirt with some jersey or lycra mixed in it so that it stretches at least a little bit when you try to move!
