From using all your will to steer clear of chocolates and sweets to scrubbing your face extra rigorously thanks to those dreaded breakouts, there are a number of things we do to get rid of our spotty problems. But what if the things you do to deal with your zits are all wrong? We help you get the facts right by busting a few common acne myths that we've heard way too many times. Yes, you really can eat pizzas and fries without constantly worrying about a zit attack!
Fact: Cleansing your face too often can in fact cause irritation and dehydrate your skin. Acne is caused deep within the pore thanks to excess oil, dead skin and bacteria trapped in the follicle. Pimples are caused when the follicle wall is ruptured and inflammation occurs. You need cleansing products that suit your skin type and penetrate into the pores to avoid acne from forming - and you don't have to use them a 100 times a day!
Fact: Acne is caused by clogged pores, which swell into pimples and can leave behind scars; it is a condition that can’t be ignored and will only get worse if not treated. If it’s a mild problem, then it can be topically treated by over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide products. If it is chronic, then it must be treated by a dermatologist.
Fact: Junk food may not be healthy, but it is definitely not the cause of your breakouts. Food that is rich in salt or sugar can worsen your zit problems at times by making your skin greasier. However, they don't cause the problem since pimples are more of a bacterial problem. Occasionally treating yourself to junk/ comfort food is perfectly fine, so go ahead and indulge yourself minus the guilt. Don't go overboard, though. :)
Fact: This may be true for some lucky few, but there are plenty of us who still suffer from unexpected breakouts well into our 20s and 30s. Adult acne is a common problem and can be caused by anything from stress and hormonal fluctuations to genetics.
Fact: It’s tempting to squeeze a zit when it rears its ugly head to make it smaller and go away faster, but doing this will do nothing except help it leave behind an ugly mark on your face and spread the infection on the surrounding skin. So make it a point to keep your hands off your face always!
Fact: There are so many people suffering from problematic skin who are so afraid of using moisturizer because they fear it will cause even more breakouts. This could be true if you’re using the wrong moisturizer for your skin type, which can clog your pores, so it is essential to use one that is oil-free and mild to still keep your skin hydrated.
Fact: If you’ve been prone to angry zits, then you’ve definitely heard this piece of ill advice at some point in time. Toothpaste can maybe help dry out a pimple, but it can also burn your skin by dehydrating it, and may contain chemical ingredients that will clog your pores. There are so many better alternatives to apply on an embarrassing spot, so please never try this!
Fact: Blackheads are dead skin cells and excess sebum that have coalesced into a worm-like shape and are clogging the pores. The top of the blackhead changes to black or dark brown when it is exposed to air, which could be the reason why it is commonly assumed to be dirt trapped in the skin. Exfoliate regularly to get rid of dead cells and excess oil from your pores.
