Weekend Watchlist: 7 Oscar-Nominated Movies I am Watching & You Should Too

January 25, 2023 clearly belonged to Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan. The entire nation was busy discussing his badass comeback. Obviously, my weekend plans included watching the movie. Sadly, I couldn’t get tickets but I am not letting that ruin my weekend. The plan now is to snuggle up in my blanket and spend the weekend watching some great films from the past year. 

Presenting to you, a list of Oscar-nominated movies, some of which I would be watching. If you are also looking to indulge in films, I have some great options. After all, the Oscars is considered to be the most prestigious award ceremony in the world. 

India Made It To Oscars 2023!

Let me start with apna India. 

RRR

Oscar nomination: RRR’s song Naatu Naatu made it to the best original song shortlist. The song has already gone global. It became the first Indian song to win the best original song award at the 80th Golden Globes.

The Plot: Directed by SS Rajamouli, the movie is nothing short of a spectacle. RRR is set in the 1920s. It stars the brilliant Ram Charan and Jr. NTR essaying the role of legendary revolutionaries. While Ram Charan is part of the British police force, Jr. NTR belongs to a tribal community. When the British take away a child from the community to serve them, they both join hands to save her.

All That Breathes

Oscar Nomination: In the documentary feature film category

The Plot: Nature lovers, this one’s for you! The movie showcases the bond between two brothers, working to rescue the birds of prey injured in Delhi’s toxic air. According to the internet’s verdict, Filmmaker Shaunak Sen’s documentary is a marvel. I hear the movie has gorgeous cinematography and brilliantly showcases how the two brothers interact with nature.

Where to watch: Unfortunately, I couldn’t find where I can watch this one

The Elephant Whisperers

Oscar Nomination: In the best documentary short film category

The Plot: The film revolves around a couple from South India—Bomman and Billie. Their lives are dedicated to taking care of an orphaned elephant, named Raghu. According to the buzz on Twitter, the film beautifully captures the bond between the couple and the elephant. They protect him, love him like their own. As a pet parent, I am def excited for this one!

Movies With Maximum Oscar Nominations & Where To Watch Them

These movies have got 11-9 nominations. Of course, they should be on everyone’s watchlist.

Everything Everywhere All At Once

Oscar Nomination: The movie has topped the 95th Academy Awards with 11 nominations–best picture, director, actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, original screenplay, editing, costume design, score, song..huff!

The Plot: If you love the concept of a parallel universe, or better known as the multiverse, this one’s for you! The movie is about a Chinese immigrant who has to save her existence, while exploring different universes and interacting with the lives she could have led. Woah! Sounds a lot, right? Maybe that’s why it is brilliant. Well, I am all set for a multiverse adventure. You can join in too!

Where to watch: Streaming on Bookmyshow Stream. You have to rent it at Rs 149 once or buy the film for Rs 349

The Banshees Of Inisherin

Oscar nominations: The movie is nominated in nine categories–best picture, director, actor, supporting actor, supporting actress, original screenplay, score, editing.

The Plot: Set in a remote island off the coast of Ireland, the movie explores the ups and downs between Farrell’ Pádraic and Gleeson’s Colm’s friendship. Gleeson, who plays a folk musician abruptly ends his friendship with Farrell, his longtime drinking buddy. This results in alarming consequences for both of them. I hear that the movie has an ambiguous ending, which leaves it to open interpretations. So I have to watch it!

All Quiet On The Western Front

Oscar nomination: Nine nominations including best picture, adapted screenplay, international feature, cinematography, production design, score, sound, visual effects, makeup and hairstyling.

The Plot: The movie is an adaptation of author Erich Maria remarque’s famed novel about World War I. It tells the story of Paul and his comrades, young German soldiers on the Western Front of World War I.

The Fabelmans

Oscar nomination: Eight nominations including best picture, director, actress, original screenplay, supporting actor, score, production design.

The Plot: The internet chatter tells me that the American film director Steven Spielberg gives us a peek into his life through this film. Through young Sammy Fabelman, Spielberg shows us his passion for filmmaking. The film takes us through the journey of a boy who falls in love with movies after his parents take him to see The Greatest Show on Earth. Sammy then starts making short films at home featuring his own family.

Where to watch: The movie isn’t available for streaming anywhere in India atm. It will soon be available on Apple TV India. I will update you on when it is getting released in India. Watch this space!
