Twitter Thread Proves ‘Tu Jhooti Main Makkar’ Lost The Plot About Modern Relationships

In a Luv Rajan universe, there is just one role for a woman—she is insufferable ‘coz she knows what she wants. After a plethora of toxic women characters, his film Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar attempted to redeem that. While the rom-com performed well at the box office, a Twitter thread pointed at the problematic treatment of Shraddha Kapoor in the flick.

Allow to give me a little context—spoiler alert ahead! Shraddha plays the part of an independent working woman Nisha Malhotra aka Tinni. She wants to live alone with the man she loves, Rohan “Mickey” Arora. But I guess it was too much to ask for.

A Twitter user shared her take on the issue and wrote, “watched tu jhooti main makkar & realised it’s about glamorising joint family system? they especially took a strong independent woman and made her believe that she will be happy in a joint family system once she gave up her hopes of her own house and independent life???”

That’s not all! Areeba also mentioned that there are women who are comfortable with the joint family step up and some are not. Neither of these choices should be glamorised or shamed.

Areeba concluded the thread with, “It gives men the wrong idea that they can take an independent woman and mould her according to their own expectations. This is not how things work in reality.” Scroll down for the entire thread:

Areeba’s honesty resonated with a lot of women on the micro-blogging site. One such tweet read, “The ending was so expected because public would’ve probably cancelled the picture but its so Wrong!!! Like they could’ve lived together without a joint family and be happy? Why are females portrayed as villains for wanting a separate house?” Here is what others had to say about the thread:

In all honesty, I agree with Areeba. Shraddha’s character in the film was giving the ultimate main character energy. But she was discouraged to go after what she wanted and make the conventional choice. I would have loved to see Micky taking a stand for his girlfriend for her happiness. But alas, Bollywood is yet to give complete agency to women characters.

Kudos to Shraddha for picking such a strong character! If only Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar had taken a different route.
