Mom Knows Best: Bollywood Celebs & Team POPxo Share Beauty Tips They Learnt From Their Mothers

Mom Knows Best: Bollywood Celebs & Team POPxo Share Beauty Tips They Learnt From Their Mothers

Much of what I know about skincare — barring the 9-step K-Beauty regimen — comes from mom. Nothing beats her age-old, glow-inducing, mane-loving nuskas — aka DIYs. And while I have learned a lot from my own mother, I also have B-Town mothers to thank, from whom I have borrowed a lot of tips and whipped up many concoctions for my skin and hair. This Mother’s Day, I revisited some of them. Read on to see which ones are my favourites!

Ananya & Bhavna Panday’s 3-Ingredient Face Mask

Ananya Panday’s curd-honey-turmeric mask is inspired by Bhavna Panday. The recipe involves mixing 1 tablespoon of curd and honey with 1 teaspoon of turmeric. The mask hydrates, moisturises, and brightens your skin while soothing redness and inflammation instantly.

Kareena & Babita Kapoor’s Curd-Oil Recipe

Kareena Kapoor’s au naturel glow is thanks to Babita Kapoor’s go-to DIY for the skin. The mask is composed of one tablespoon of both Almond Oil and curd. While Almond Oil moisturises, prevents premature ageing, and heals wounds, curd exfoliates the skin and fights pigmentation. The payoff for this mask is healthy, glowing skin.

Kiara & Geneviev’s Besan Concoction

Kiara’s glow isn’t simply genetic. It’s thanks to Genevieve’s mashup of fresh cream and besan/gram flour. This mix exfoliates the face to reveal a brighter, healthier complexion. It can lighten a tan and increase your skin’s elasticity too.

Janhvi & Sridevi Kapoor’s Hair Growth DIY

Janhvi Kapoor’s profound fascination with beauty comes from Sridevi; who was both skincare and hair-care-savvy. She passed down to Janhvi and Khushi an invaluable DIY recipe for the hair. The recipe involved mixing some dried-up Hibiscus flowers, with one tablespoon of Amla Powder and three to four tablespoons of Coconut Oil; all of which will make your hair grow stronger and faster.

Priyanka & Madhu Chopra’s Coconut Oil Hack

Madhu Chopra has willed many of her own skin-cum-hair DIYs to P.C. Both the Chopras massage their faces with Coconut Oil. But that’s not where they stop. They soak a towel in lukewarm/warm water before wiping their faces with it. This exfoliates the skin, removes makeup, and cleanses the skin from the inside out.

The POPxo team discusses all that they’ve learned about beauty from their mums!

  • A skincare tip or trick that you picked up from your mother?:I noticed a beautiful brown bottle in my mom’s closet many many years ago. I saw her apply it every night. I tried it a few times myself (I was probably 8) and loved it. I never knew what it was. But many years later, when I turned into a beauty buff, I realised that it was the Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair serum. It’s been over a decade that I’ve been using the same serum in my skincare routine and there’s no looking back! I’ve gone through more beautiful brown bottles than I can count on my finders. If you’re lazy like me and you don’t want to commit to an elaborate routine, this serum is all you need.
  • Something you’ve taught her about skincare?: That moisturiser is her friend and Pears (soap) should not be used on the face or body.

  • What’s one beauty DIY your mother passed down to you?: Applying dahi. On my skin, on my hair, it works for everything. Any time I complain about pigmentation or my hair feeling extra rough, she asks me when the last time I applied dahi was. It solves everything!
  • A skincare tip or trick that you picked up from her?: Never. Skip. Sunscreen.
  • Something you’ve taught her about skincare?: Serums. They weren’t big in her days and I’ve taught her the importance of different acids, concoctions, and more. She still swears by her dahi (paired with either besan/haldi) though!

  • What’s one beauty DIY your mother passed down to you: A Methi-Hibiscus paste for dandruff. Soak methi overnight and throw in fresh hibiscus flowers and leaves to make a paste. Apply it on your scalp for 30 minutes before rinsing it off.
  • A skincare tip or trick that you picked up from her: I have a very middle-class Bengali mom: Boroline in my house has always been irreplaceable. She’d apply Boroline on her elbows and feet every night religiously. I learned that from her. Dark elbows, who? Now, my heels never crack!
  • Something you’ve taught her about skincare?: I taught her to use face serums when she started getting wrinkles! Now she’s all about hyaluronic acid, AHA-BHA, glycolic acid, and whatnot! I am now learning from her again. How the tables have turned in a year.

  • What’s one beauty DIY your mother passed down to you: My mom showed me how to remove my tan after a summer vacation. She would make me apply tomato pulp on my skin and wash it off after a few minutes. The hack works so well, it brightens my skin instantly.
  • A skincare tip or trick that you picked up from her: To apply aloe vera gel as a spot corrector on my pimples.
  • Something you’ve taught her about skincare?: I’ve introduced my mom to facial massages after applying a facial oil or night cream, and she loves it.

Urvi Shah, Beauty Writer

  • What’s one beauty DIY your mother passed down to you?: My mother’s go-to DIY is composed of besan, honey, and banana; and it truly makes my skin feel fresh and smooth post-application.
  • A skincare tip or trick that you picked up from her?: Moisturising the skin after shaving to soothe redness and irritation.
  • Something you’ve taught her about skincare?: To apply all of her skincare products on her neck and hands too.

BRB. I’m treating mom and myself to some of these recipes today!
