11 Bollywood Celebs Who Ditched Meat & Are Now Proud Vegetarians

Becoming a vegetarian (and vegan) has been catching on for a while now. A lot of people are quitting eating meat and other animal products to protest against the rampant cruelty against animals in slaughterhouses everywhere. Did you know that increased consumption of meat has now been linked with dangerous climate change? 

Recently, a lot of celebrities have also chosen to go the vegan way. Some of them have chosen vegetarianism to support the ‘cruelty-free’ life and some just wanted to be healthier.

1. Sonam Kapoor

If there is something that you’d expect from the members of the Kapoor Khandaan, a typical Punjabi family, it would be that they love their non-vegetarian food and alcohol. Sonam Kapoor was no different and her favourite was seafood. However, she became more fitness conscious over the years and turned to vegetarianism. She is now a vegan since dairy products do not seem to suit her. In an interview, she said, “I stopped eating meat four years ago. What has happened now is that I have stopped consuming milk and milk products.”

2. Kartik Aaryan

The Love Aaj Kal 2 hottie was named the hottest male vegetarian celebrity in India in 2018 by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). Kartik went on record and said, “It only took one video of animals suffering and dying in the meat industry to convince me to go vegetarian.” He further added, “The kindest thing anybody can do for cows, pigs, chickens, and all the animals is to stop eating them.”

3. Anushka Sharma

Anushka Sharma has been a vocal animal rights activist and has often spoken up against the inhumane behaviour that animals have to go through. She also built an animal shelter on one of her birthdays to ensure animal safety. In a conversation with a leading daily, she had admitted that “Going vegetarian was one of the best decisions I ever made. I have more energy — I feel healthier, and I’m so happy that no animals had to suffer for my meals.”

4. Alia Bhatt

Vegetarianism happened accidentally to Alia Bhatt. One summer, she gave up eating non-vegetarian food for health benefits and ended up liking it so much that she stuck to it. Her vegetarian father, Mahesh Bhatt, is all too happy to see this change.

5. Shahid Kapoor

Shahid Kapoor has been a vegetarian for the longest time and he’s very vocal about it too. In fact, it was even reported that he convinced his then-girlfriend, Kareena Kapoor to become a vegetarian when they were dating. He took on vegetarianism as a lifestyle when his father gifted him the book ‘Life Is Fair’ by Brian Hines. One read was all it took for him to give up meat. In fact, he has been a part of several PETA ad campaigns and was awarded Asia’s Sexiest Vegetarian in 2011 by them.

6. Sonakshi Sinha

Sonakshi Sinha is an avid animal lover and to show her support to causes against animal cruelty, she gave up non-vegetarian food. Her strictly vegetarian diet helped her lose tons of weight and improved her metabolism which made her even more committed to it.

7. Jacqueline Fernandez

Jacqueline Fernandez is all about living a healthy life and eating clean food. Her love for organic food, as well as animals, turned her to vegan food. She also owns a restaurant in Colombo that serves healthy food on its menu. She is a staunch supporter of NGOs that are doing their bit for the animals. 

8. Kangana Ranaut

Hailing from the hills, Kangana Ranaut loved her meat till she realized that it really did not agree with her body. Soon, she gave up all meat and dairy products and became a vegan for her own health. She once said in an interview, “When I decided to become a vegetarian, I realized that consuming dairy products was not agreeing with me and was giving me acidity. Hence, I switched to being a vegan and this has made a lot of difference in my life. I am very happy now.

9. Neha Dhupia

Belonging to a Sikh family, Neha was brought up on a non-vegetarian diet. But she quit eating meat, as she’d always wanted, for her beloved animals. She once said, “I’ve realized that the benefits of eating plant-based foods include feeling energetic and succeeding to keep weight in control.

10. Esha Gupta

In 2013, Esha Gupta realized that her lifestyle was not only harming herself but also the environment as it involved butchering innocent animals. Since then, the actress has been enjoying her plant-based vegan lifestyle and has endorsed PETA’s various ad campaigns.

11. John Abraham

If you love bulking up but think you can’t do it without meat, John Abraham will prove you wrong. The actor that has one of the best bodies in Bollywood is a vegetarian by choice and loves it!
