I have always been in love with kurtas. As a child when I used to see my mother wearing a kurta, I couldn’t wait to start wearing them too! So as soon as I thought I was “old enough”, I ended up buying so many that my wardrobe was overflowing with them in every colour!
Now the thing with kurtas is that they either shrink or start looking really old after a year of washing and wearing. Because of this, I now had a cupboard filled with kurtas I liked but couldn’t wear, until one day I went shopping and really liked a super expensive ethnic jacket!

That’s when I first thought of putting my age old kurtas to use rather than throwing them away. When I suggested this idea to my mother, she was a little confused as she thought this wasn’t possible at all. Plus she was also hellbent that I wear those old pieces of clothing just how they were (BUT HOW COULD I?). So I waited till I got a job and shifted to a different city to chop off my old clothes.
The first thing on my priority list when I moved out was to cut these kurtas into something better looking – into jackets! New city, new people and I had no idea where to go to check this off my list. Hence, I decided to take one step at a time. I crossed my fingers and took two of my least favorite kurtas and went to a tailor nearby. It took a little convincing from my side to talk him into doing this. He only altered uniforms for army men and had no idea what I wanted. I literally had to draw him a picture of what I was looking for. He asked me to come back the next day with lace or buttons or whatever else I wanted on my jackets. And so I did!
I was amazed to see how great this idea of mine, that I had started to doubt, had turned out. My kurta-turned-jackets looked amazing! I didn’t go overboard with lace or other add-ons, because I wasn’t sure how it’d turn out. But now that I know, I’m definitely getting more of these made!
The first thing I did with them was – took pictures and sent them to my mother. And guess what? She really liked them too! I wore them a couple of times since I got them made and nobody could guess where I got them from!

But you know the secret now! So look around in your closet and you will definitely find items you can give new life to in there. We all have clothes we keep stacking up but never wear, right? It’s time to turn them into something you’ve always wanted!
