Sugaring – Your (Almost) Painless Alternative To Waxing!

Sugaring – Your (Almost) Painless Alternative To Waxing!

Waxing may be our go-to for hair removal, but what if we told you there was a better alternative that didn’t hurt as much? Yup, sugaring is a way sweeter hair removal method to try, which is much gentler on your skin. If you don’t want to spend on laser removal, hate shaving and would love to try an alternative to waxing, then sugaring is definitely a must-try. Read on to know everything there is to know about this age-old hair removal technique.

What Exactly Is Sugaring?

It is an all-natural paste made from sugar, lemon and water and which is spread over the area and pulled off. It removes the hair directly from the follicle without pulling at the skin instead of breaking the hair at the surface of the skin. It is relatively pain-free and its effects last for some time.

How Does It Work?

There are 2 ways you can do it. The more traditional method involves applying a warm, thick texture in the opposite direction of hair growth. It is then flicked off in the same direction. The other method, which is more common today and is similar to waxing, is applying the gel in the same direction of hair growth and removed with a cloth or muslin strip in the opposite direction.

Waxing Vs Sugaring

Let’s compare some basic pros and cons to see if you should give waxing a rest and try sugaring instead.

The Ouch Factor – Sugaring Wins

Because sugaring doesn’t really pull at your skin, it only sticks to the hair, it doesn’t cause much trauma to your skin, which means less pain.

Going Over The Same Area Again and Again – Sugaring Wins

You know how when you have stubborn, tiny hair that doesn’t come off at the first try, with waxing you can’t keep going over the same area again and again as that will cause redness and irritation. But with sugaring, you can. It is water-based and gentle enough to not irritate the skin.

Great For Sensitive Skin – Sugaring Wins

Like we said, sugaring doesn’t cause irritation and is gentle on the skin because of its all-natural basic ingredients, making it better suited for sensitive skin than waxing.

It Doesn’t Leave A Sticky Mess – Sugaring Wins

Sugaring paste is water-soluble, which means it can be easily wiped off with water and doesn’t leave you feeling like a sticky mess like with waxing.

It Is Easily Available – Waxing Wins

While waxing is super common and is a treatment available at just about any and every parlour, sugaring is a treatment that is hard to find at a salon. However, there are plenty of kits available online or you can even make the paste at home and do it yourself, making it cheaper and more convenient than waxing.

Our verdict? Sugaring takes home the most points; though it isn’t free of ALL discomfort, it doesn’t hurt as much as waxing does. However, finding a professional to perform could be a bit tough, so you can try it at home.

How To Make Sugaring Paste At Home

You will find multiple at-home sugaring kits online (especially on Amazon), but if you would like to try your hand at a DIY paste, here’s how. You Will Need

  • 2 cups of sugar
  • 1/4th cup of water
  • 1/4th cup of lime juice
  • A jar to store it in

How To Make It

Add the ingredients to a saucepan and let it melt over low heat. Keep stirring it to prevent the sugar from sticking to the pan. Once it starts bubbling, turn off the heat and set it aside to cool before pouring it in a jar to store. Wait for it to cool before you apply it to your skin. The consistency should be like honey; if it is too runny, allow it to cool, and if it is too thick, heat it some more. The same can be done in the microwave – just add the ingredients to the bowl and heat it for a minute.
