#MyStory: How My Arranged Marriage Turned Into A Love Marriage!

#MyStory: How My Arranged Marriage Turned Into A Love Marriage!

One fine day in 2013, my parents told me about this prospective guy for marriage. They told me that the guy was my schoolmate, but I don’t think we ever met in school. I was not comfortable marrying a guy from the same community. Given the city that we hail from, this means the possibility of a lot of melodrama and I was so not ready for it.

So, I decided to meet the guy with the intention of rejecting him and spending a few more years of my life with my much-loved independence. There was one more thing that bothered me – Ravi also worked in Pune, the same city where I was living and working. There would be NO escaping him if I agreed even tentatively to this rishta.

I met him the day after Diwali with my whole family in tow. After the meeting, my family emotionally blackmailed me and despite my plans, I ended up saying “yes”. Then I quickly came back to Pune, my safe haven.

The guy was actually cute and super polite. I, however, tried his patience by avoiding his calls, ignoring his texts, even blocking him on FB. And I made excuses every time he planned to meet me. He even sent me roses, chocolates and a sweet card on Valentine’s Day. I didn’t even wish him.

A couple of days after that his patience ran out, I guess, for he called off our engagement. I came to know about this from my dad. Instead of feeling relieved, I felt like my world had turned upside down. I was shocked when my dad told me over the phone; I didn’t know how to react and tears started rolling down my cheeks. I tried to convince my dad that I didn’t do anything wrong – though, at the back of my mind, I knew that it was my behavior that drove Ravi to take such a step.

Suddenly, I started missing him. I called him innumerable times and, as you might expect, he didn’t pick up any of my calls. I felt that I had to meet him and talk to him. I had no idea what I would talk to him about, but I knew I needed to see him.

Like a fool, I went to his office and straight to his cabin. Obviously, he was surprised. He tried convincing me to leave his office, but I was adamant that he tell me the reason for calling off the engagement…even though I knew the answer. Finally, he managed to convince me that we should meet outside the office and I left. We met at a cafe and he refused to reconsider his decision.

I, on the other hand, had fallen for him and knew that he was the one I wanted to marry. Also, I was not ready to give up; for two months I kept apologizing and convincing him to give us a chance. And finally, he accepted that he also liked me. We started seeing each other.

While we two were in love, we had to let our families know about the change in scenario. To our dismay, our families refused to accept our relationship after so much having happened already. So, I took the matter into my hands; I got my aunt and his mother on a con call and requested them to sort things out. Then both the families met again and we got married on November 29, 2014.

We must be among those very few couples who go through such drama even though we met in an arranged marriage set up. Today, we have completed almost two years as a married couple and I want to be with him till my hair turns grey!
