Colour It Up: 10 New Hues for the New-Age Bride

Trousseau shopping is one of the few no-questions-asked legit excuses for a woman to go all out with her splurging. But it’s not just fun and games. The traditional wear trousseau that a bride-to-be meticulously (at least we hope so!) builds should be one that will last her for years to come. It ought to strike the right balance between trendy and timeless, and not just in terms of the styles and silhouettes but colours as well.

Indian fashion’s new-age turn has finally pushed the bride to explore colours beyond siren red and rani pink. The latest turn in fashion-scape is one that leads to cooler and calmer colours (though we aren’t completely writing of our favourite pop numbers) that provide a much-needed reprieve in the face of our high-stress, fast-paced lives. So we scoured the runways, celebrity style files and Pantone shade cards to bring you the au courant trousseau palette that you ought to seriously consider! Here are 10 new bridal colours you should take seriously!

1. True Blood: Marsala

Bridal Colours

This one’s a no-brainer considering it’s Pantone’s colour of 2015! Equal parts sophisticated and royal, this jewelled tone is a definite winner. It’s sexy while being classy, and restrained though still look-at-me. An embroidered floor length anarkali or Chantilly lace sari in this shade gets our vote.

2. Gilded Glamour: Head-to-Toe Gold

Bridal Colours

Is restrained chic more your style? You’ll find your sartorial soul mate in head-to-toe-gold! Though the gilded hue has always been a favourite to embellish and highlight desi wear, we suggest going full throttle! Why not skip bridal red and opt for a gold wedding lehenga a la Soha Ali Khan? Extra props to those bold enough to make that move.

POPxo Recommends: Bhanuni by Jyoti Golden Net & Chanderi Lehenga Set With Zardozi on Indian Roots, Rs 25,950

3. Ode to Royalty: Classic Blue

Bridal Colours

A true blue epitome of confidence and grandeur, classic blue is one of those few shades that will never go out of style. We’d even go as far as saying that it’s the next best thing to black, particularly for an evening do! A blue sari with gota pati work and a pop pink blouse or blue-and-gold lehenga should do the trick, shouldn’t it?

POPxo Recommends: Gaurav Gupta Blue Churidar Kameez Dupatta on Jabong, Rs. 10,500

4. Yellow Fever: Chartreuse

Before you scoff at the very mention of this cheery colour family (as many women do), hear us out – a. Yellow is huge this season, and b. We aren’t suggesting you slip into anything that will put Tweety’s sunniness to shame. You can’t possibly say no to chartreuse, a shade that’s halfway between green and yellow! Citrusy and statement-making without being over the top, it makes for a fine combination indeed.

POPxo Recommends: Marigold Weaves Chartreuse Yellow Tie and Dye Sari on Exclusively In, Rs. 16,445

5. Toasted Almond

Bridal Colours

We’re big on organic colours this season and toasted almond is pretty high up on that list. It’s earthy and timeless without deviating into boring territory. What’s more, there is something comforting about the colour that makes you take an instant liking to it. We recommend a straight tunic with silver sequined embellishment on the yoke, or a hand-woven kurti in the shade.

6. Ivory

Bridal Colours

If you’re superstitious about including white in your bridal trousseau (though we must reiterate that head-to-toe white is a trend du jour), then opt for the almost-similar ivory. The shade’s everlasting charm lies in its uncanny simplicity. Truth be told, no pop colour will be able to match its luxe appeal.

7. Pretty in Pink: Strawberry Ice

Bridal Colours

Forgo fuchsia and hot pink for its subtler counterpart – presenting strawberry ice. This pastel hue is refreshing and appealing and doesn’t compromise on the feminine quotient either. From a high low hemline salwar to a sari, or lehenga in the colour, nothing is off limits.

POPxo Recommends: Biba Pink Cotton Kalidar Salwar Set, Rs. 3,299

8. Orange is the New Black: Tangerine

Nothing like tangy tangerine to pack in a punch; particularly for purveyors of pop colours. This energizing shade is bound to make heads turn but rest assured, it won’t have onlookers scrambling for their sunglasses. It’s the perfect pick for a mehendi outfit – a sharara, might we suggest?

POPxo Recommends: Svarikaa Orange Embroidered Lehenga on Jabong, Rs. 5,999

9. Lucite Green

Bridal Colours

An unlikely choice we agree, but this decidedly preppy colour is a welcome break from the overdose of lush, jewelled green. Though don’t write it off as a colour that is only fit for the Hamptons. Your trousseau will thank you for its newness. Sport the cool colour from top to bottom in a floor length anarkali and throw in diamond baubles to the mix.

POPxo Recommends: The Silk Tree by Darshan Dhupia – Mint Green Paisley Embroidered Kurta with Textured Georgette Sharara, Rs. 22,000

10. Black

Bridal Colours

Now don’t go all superstitious on us, please. We don’t need to sell you on the virtues of this universally flattering and stately colour, do we? Don’t wear it for your main functions but there’s no harm in adding it to your trousseau. Get for an indo-western piece in the colour – an embroidered peplum top, structured jacket or a dhoti gown.

POPxo Recommends: Tarun Tahiliani Gilet Scarf, Rs. 12,900
