#RealGirlBeauty: 6 Things You Should Know about Hair Fall

If clogged drains and nightmares about balding are the bane of your existence, then we totally feel you. Most experts say losing about 100 strands a day is okay, but if you’re seeing more hair than usual in your paddle brush or leaving a trail of strands in your wake, then chances are that you’re shedding more than is normal.

How Much Is Too Much?

Out of all the hair on your head, at any given time, about 90% of your strands are growing and 10% is “resting”. It’s completely normal for this 10% to fall out in order to make way for your new growth, which is why it’s healthy to lose some strands daily. However, if you feel like you’re losing a bit more than normal, it could mean that more than 10% are “resting”, which is when you should start taking action. Here’s what you should know about hair fall and what you can to do save your precious strands.

1. Check Your Hair Regime

Do your bit and give yourself a scalp massage before you shampoo your hair. It really boosts blood circulation, which encourages hair growth, and nourishes your strands, which strengthens them. Make sure to use a mild shampoo and not one that is too harsh for your locks.

2. Cut Out the Heat and Chemicals

Think of this as detox that your hair really needs. Say no to the straightening iron (hide it if you have to), and while using a hair dryer, switch to the cool air settings. If you were thinking about colouring your hair, we suggest you postpone it if you’re suffering from a lot of hair loss. Even if you go to the best salon and use the best brand, it’s still chemicals. Let your hair get stronger and then go crazy.

3. Coconut Oil to the Rescue

The West is just waking up to coconut oil, which is one secret weapon us Indians know about only too well. If you haven’t oiled your hair since you left school, then you may want to get into the habit again since it really helps control hair fall. Combine equal parts of coconut oil with castor oil and a handful of curry leaves. Simmer for 30 minutes, strain and massage into your hair frequently.

4. Say No to Stress

Your job, your relationship, that fight with your bestie, office politics: you have no idea how much stress can affect your system. And one of the first things that it affects is your gorgeous, beautiful hair. Learn to relax; take one day at a time and meditate in your own way. We think deep breaths, green tea, peppermint oil and good music really help. If you’re unable to chill, go cold turkey and temporarily cut off that part of your life which is literally making your hair fall out.

5. Bid Goodbye to Flakes

Dandruff, even a few flakes can affect the strength of your hair. Take swift action by using a shampoo with ZPTO, an ingredient that has proven to reduce dandruff and also combat hair fall. Nizoral Shampoo works wonders in treating dandruff and the hair loss caused by it.

6. Seek Help

If you feel like you’re losing way too much hair and the problem is chronic, it’s important to see a professional. Hair fall can be a result of stress or lack of vitamins, but if its causes are hormonal then it’s best to consult a dermatologist or even a homoeopathic doctor: it’ll take sometime, but it’s worth it.
