#RealGirlStyle: How to Style Denim on Denim

For years, denim on denim, also known as the “Canadian tuxedo” was considered a faux pas, a fashion blasphemy even! Maybe because we never really managed to recover from the Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake disastrous 2001 American Music Awards matching head-to-toe light wash denim look! But then came the blogger and street style surge, and the trend (worn right, of course) quickly made it to the top of trend charts. And don’t let Katy Perry and Riff Raff’s recent all-denim look deter you from sporting this style either. If anything, simply consider their look a master class in “how not to wear head-to-toe denim”! And with our double-denim manual, you won’t be making the same mistake as them – that we can guarantee!

#1. Mix, Don’t Match

Denim on Denim

The oldest trick in the book – one you should follow like the law – is to always pair two varying shades of blue together, unless you are wearing denim overalls. And it isn’t just about mixing washes; the weight of the fabric should vary as well. Go too matchy-matchy, and you run the risk of looking like you’re headed to the rodeo.

#2. Add A Pop Of Colour

Even with the varying degrees of blue, the look can get monotonous if not broken with a hint of colour. So, if you’ve teamed jeans with an open denim shirt or vest, add a funky statement tee to the mix. This is the easiest way to elevate the look. You can turn to your watch, footwear or bag to give the look a colour reprieve too.

#3. Pay Attention to Proportions

For this look to really be winning, it’s important to pay attention to proportions. It’s simply a game of balance in the end. For instance, if you’re wearing flared jeans, then avoid a slouchy denim jacket—the entire effect will be too baggy. It’s important to throw something sleek into the mix. Skinny jeans with a tucked shirt are a good option. Ripped jeans are not off the charts either. Good fit, of course, is everything.

#4. Know Your Body Type

Denim on DenimYour body type plays a key role as well. Now we all know dark washes are slimming and lighter shades of denim draw attention to the body parts they cover. So for someone on the heavier side, wearing dark denims with a light chambray shirt is the ideal combination.

#5. Accessorize!

The Canuck tux is all about nonchalant cool vibe. And an overkill of accessories will make it look anything but. Chunky accessories are best avoided. Minimal pieces like layered pendants, a cutout cuff or an ear cuff are your best bets. It should feel like you just threw it on, but it come together effortlessly. Denim accessories are a complete no-no. If you don’t want to experiment with accessories, simply slip into black pointy toe pumps and add a leather tote for a street-style worthy look.
