The Effective Fish-tail Braid

Now let’s be clear about one thing – braids aren’t new to us Indians. Our grandmoms flaunted them in saris, our mothers in their Jai Jai Shiv Shankarbell-bottoms. And now it’s our chance to make them look as fabulous as us in our shirt dresses and what not. But this time, make sure you amp it up a little with a fish-tail braid.

How to style the braid:

For a braid, you need hair that’s super-shiny. So start off by using the Recharge High Octane Shine Shampoo and Conditioner (Rs 700 and Rs 850 respectively) to gloss it up. Pull your hair to the side in a low ponytail and tie it up with a rubber band. Split your mane in half above the ponytail holder and make a little hole. Hold the split with one hand and pull the bottom half of the ponytail up and through the hole. Pull it back behind to make a nice knot and then start braiding it.

Use the Manipulator Styling Gel (Rs 900) if you’re looking to add some texture and body, as the magical gunk helps you work with the hair. Split your ponytail into two equal halves, each hand holding a half. Take a piece of hair from the right side and cross it over front to the other side. Next, take an outside piece from the left side, and take it across and over to the right. Blend it into its new side, and keep repeating this process until you get to the very bottom.

Now top it off – by pulling a few strands out to create a bedhead-y look. Use the Maxxed Out Spray (Rs 730) to seal it in place. Messy yet cute, heh?

The Straight Bait

Bad hair days need straight hair to make you feel super-good about yourself. #truestory. But always, make sure they come with a good wash and oodles of conditioning to make it stay in place and add elegance to your quick hairstyle look.

How to style straight hair:

Straight hair is easy if you use the right tools. First up, pre-care is important to get that shiny, luscious look. So rinse your hair with the Elasticate Super Charged Shampoo and Conditioner (Rs 700 and Rs 850 respectively) to give it a bit of strength. Make sure you use the Candy Fixation Glaze Haze, a sweet smoothing serum that reduces frizz and enhances shine (Rs 700) and helps speed up the blow-drying ritual. Take a round brush and comb your hair out; it will give your strands tons of body and volume.  After you run the flat iron through, spritz some Spoil Me Defrizzer Spray (Rs 950) on any stray strands to make them stay in place. Brush it out and leave!

Friendly tip: straighten your hair the night before and brush it out for 5 minutes before you head out with such easy hairstyles. Overnight hair is more rested and glam.

The Everyday Beach Waves

This one’s probably gives one the impression that bohemian is effortless and an excellent quick hairstyle- just brush your hair and go. Well, no. The perfect beach waves need a bit of work, a little curl cream and a swift hand.

How to style beach waves:

Start off with freshly washed hair but a little pre-care goes a long way. Shampoo your hair with a volumizing shampoo like the Styleshots Epic Volume Shampoo and Conditioner (Rs 700 and Rs 850 respectively) to add bounce to the hair. Once you get started, use Small Talk (Rs 850) – the essential energizer and stylizer to control, define and separate your hair. The good thing about Small Talk is that it controls frizz while moisturizing hair. Using a curling iron, take 2-inch sections of hair and wrap it around the barrel. Don’t curl it, just wrap it – you want loose, easy waves, not tight curls. Work with messy sections and in random order because you don’t want to make it look too perfect. Finger-comb and spritz some hairspray. Use the Candy Fixations Sugar Shock Bodifying Sugar Spray (Rs 700) to remove fly-aways, to pump up the volume and to accentuate the curls.

The Big Bun

Buns are just what the doctor ordered for a bad hair day. Just tie it all up and let it go. But these days, buns are all the rage. From the ’70s high buns to messy buns a la 2014. Take a swig at it and never let a bad hair day happen again.

How to get the messy bun:

Shampoo your hair with the Urban Anti+dotes Reenergize Shampoo and Conditioner (Rs 700 and Rs 850 respectively) that not only takes care of frizz but makes sure your hair is malleable enough to work on a bun. Pull your hair into a loose ponytail – don’t worry about how it looks, the messier the better. Separate the hair in your ponytail into three or two sections, try and tease your hair so it adds texture. Use a texturizing paste like Hard To Get (Rs 750). Take the teased hair and wrap it up in opposite directions and create a topknot. Secure the hair with a bobby pin. Let the hair look messy and leave some fraying strands around. Use a hair spray like Masterpiece (Rs 950) to keep it in place and secure it. You can also alternatively use a dry shampoo if you don’t want to work on freshly washed hair.

Curls Galore

How to get bouncy curls:

Make sure you get your hair cleaned up of all its previous endeavours – whether it’s chemically treated hair or just stressed-out hair, a shampoo like Urban Anti+dotes Recovery Shampoo and Conditioner (Rs 700 and Rs 850 respectively) will get you back on track. But make sure you use it a day before because a day old hair is better to style. Flip the hair over and dry it so you add more volume to it. Divide the hair into 3 layers and curl them up into big ringlets. Use Foxxy Curls Contour Cream (Rs 800) to encourage and support curls while adding shine to them.  Don’t touch your curls, let them cool down. Brush them out if you want slight curls, shake them with your fingers for a more defined look. You can crunch it up with the Foxxy Curls Spray (Rs 800) to let your curls spring back into shape. Aha!

Pretty Ponytail

Ponytails are God’s way of telling you that you can look gorgeous everyday with minimal effort. Yep, they work well for business meetings and go with your boardroom to bar look. Versatile eh?

How to get the classy ponytail:

Start off with a good shampoo and conditioner – the Urban Anti+dotes Resurrection Shampoo (Rs 700) and Conditioner (Rs 850) work wonders as they give your hair the much-needed moisture. They makes sure that weak and brittle hair is taken care of – the more hydration the stronger the hair. And now to the ponytail after the prep. Make sure you add in a good leave-in conditioner like the Control Freak Serum (Rs 900) to fight frizz and give it a glossy finish. The product also adds as a thermal protectant if you’re using a straightener.

The easiest ponytail one can try is the French ponytail. Gather the top layer of hair and set it up high on the head with a clip. Gather some more strands from below and combine it with the hair already banded and secure with another clip. Gather the rest of the hair together and make one ponytail. You can also take a strand of hair out of the already done ponytail and wrap it around the already secured ponytail to conceal the band.  Once you have secured the hair in place, use the Superstar Hairspray (Rs 850) to add the glossy shine and texture to the hair.
